One of the first questions I ask a client during a project briefing is, "What's the deadline?" It determines our approach and the scope of work. More often than we'd like, the answer is, "Yesterday." Most “basic” products aren’t finished. They’re just designed for a generic user that doesn’t exist. Calendars, trackers, and management systems are often seen as “solved” products. But once you look at them through the lens of a specific audience, they rarely are. We saw it while working on a digital journal and calendar for students. Surprisingly, there are still very few tools designed around their reality. As products evolve toward deep personalization, it’s not always necessary to invent something entirely new. What matters is designing something specific. Talk to users! Find a real group with real constraints. Design around their reality – and suddenly even the most “basic” product becomes meaningful.
