Closed AI guides you. Open-source AI builds with you. There is a quiet problem with closed-source AI that nobody talks about. It does not just help you build. It steers you. You ask for a solution, and it nudges you toward the pattern it was trained to prefer. You ask for an architecture, and it returns the same stack everyone else is using. The result works — but it looks like everyone else's result. The project becomes a remix of what already exists, not something you actually own. That is not engineering. That is guided assembly. Closed models keep their weights hidden. You cannot inspect them. You cannot modify them. You cannot host them. And the provider can change how they behave, what they cost, or whether they work at all — and you have no say. Your entire workflow sits on a foundation you do not control. Open-source AI is the opposite. The weights are visible. The model runs on your infrastructure. You can inspect it, fine-tune it, and make it behave the way your problem requires — not the way a provider decided months ago. The performance gap is closing fast. Stanford's AI Index found the difference between leading closed and open models had narrowed to just a few percentage points. [reference:1] Open models like Llama, Mistral, Qwen, and DeepSeek are already capable of serious work. I built Oil Cloud Sentinel with open-source AI. It monitors market data, classifies conditions, and delivers structured signals automatically. It runs on models I can inspect and control — not a black box that decides for me what "correct" looks like. That project would have been harder to build with a closed model. Not because closed models are weak, but because they are not yours. Open-source AI is not the cheaper option. It is the option where the builder stays in control. #OpenSourceAI #ArtificialIntelligence #AIEngineering #EmbeddedSystems #Python #chatgpt # AI

Cover image for The SD card on your
The SD card on your ILI9488 won't init? Stop fighting the SPI bus. I spent days on this. The ILI9488 display worked perfectly, but the SD card slot on the same module refused to initialize. Shared SPI, MISO conflicts, CS timing—nothing solved it cleanly. Then I stopped trying to make the SD card work. The fix: I converted the image into a C array, embedded it directly into the ESP32's flash memory, and drew it straight to the display. No SD card. No file system. No bus conflict. The display now shows the image every time, instantly. This is the reality of embedded work. The datasheet says one thing, the hardware says another, and the deadline doesn't care. You don't always fix the original problem—you find the path that actually ships. If your embedded system is stuck in a fight with its own hardware, that's the kind of problem I solve. #EmbeddedSystems #ESP32 #FirmwareEngineering #IoT #ProblemSolving
