About this service

Summary

Animated explainer videos can enable sales teams, educate users (reduce support costs) or explain complex ideas simply. I specialise in efficiently turning your communication challenge into a successful visual story, with over 20 years of experience.

Process

Pre-production research is about understanding your content, brand, audience and context. This involves interrogating the brief to make sure we identify what success looks like.
Initial scripting lays out the framework of the video and forms the backbone of later work.
Design explores visual styles that can effectively communicate your content, works within your established brand guidelines, and is efficient to produce in order to maximise your ROI.
A sketched storyboard brings script and visuals together. Once approved the script is typically locked at this stage as subsequent changes can be costly to implement.
*A voiceover is recorded. I can source and direct this at additional cost. Costs vary according to licensing and distribution requirements but a typical professional VO will cost around £400. I am able to offer voiceovers myself for much less, for projects where this is appropriate.
*Music is sourced. Costs vary according to licensing and distribution requirements but music and sound effect budgets are typically around £200.
Artwork is created for each scene. For larger projects a fully rendered and voiced storyboard and/or animated storyboard (animatic) is produced, which allows for an extra review step.
Animation brings the visual artwork to life.
Editing pulls all the elements together into a tight final story
The sound mix adds the finishing touches that make all the difference
The final videos are encoded to the size and specs you require.

FAQs

  • How long should my video be?

Attention spans are short! I aim to be concise and efficient with them. 1-2 minutes is a good starting point. In some situations you will have a more captive, engaged or invested audience which can justify a longer video. The temptation is always to try and say too much.

  • How long should my script be?

A good rule of thumb is 100-120 words per minute. This is less than you would think. 120wpm is a great pace for communication but remember to leave cognitive space for 'reading' the visuals and for pauses to digest the messages.

  • Can I have additional formats for social media and reels?

Absolutely. These will need to be discussed to cost them accurately. If I know in advance then I can design and produce the content with efficient reformatting in mind.

  • Can you record a professional voiceover?

Yes. I have worked with voice artists all over the world, either directing them from the studio or dialling in remotely. As part of the production process I record a placeholder voiceover myself and several clients have asked to use these in the final productions.

  • What if I don't have a script?

That's often better. I can use my 25 years of experience take the outcomes you're seeking and craft them into a compelling script that delivers them.
