1. Overview This case study showcases a competitor benchmarking project for XX Company, a B2B software provider looking to sharpen its market position. The goal: turn a fragmented, hard-to-compare competitive landscape into a clear, decision-ready benchmarking model. The analysis surfaced distinct pricing tiers and a clear capability gap in the market - showing XX Company exactly where it could win on differentiation rather than compete purely on price. The project involved: Competitor identification & data structuring Benchmarking on pricing, features, and market positioning Insight generation through a 2x2 positioning framework and summary visuals Tools used: Excel, PowerPoint, structured research methodology, competitive intelligence frameworks 2. The Problem XX Company needed a clear read on its competitive landscape but faced: Competitor information scattered across websites, reviews, and analyst reports No standardized way to compare pricing, features, or market reach Difficulty spotting where the real whitespace was Data that wasn't structured enough to support a strategic decision They needed someone who could research, benchmark, and turn findings into a strategic recommendation - not just compile a list of competitors. 3. What I Did Step 1: Structured Competitive Research Researched and profiled 12 direct and adjacent competitors Standardized data into a clean benchmarking matrix (pricing, features, reach, capability) Step 2: Positioning Analysis Mapped competitors on a capability-vs-reach matrix to identify where the market was crowded vs. open Identified one clear whitespace segment where no competitor combined strong reach with strong product depth Step 3: Insight Generation & Visualization Built a market-sizing view by segment to prioritize where whitespace mattered most Delivered a summary deck with a clear recommendation, not just raw data 4. Final Outcome ✔️ Delivered a full competitive benchmarking model and summary deck ✔️ Benchmarked 12 competitors across pricing, features, and positioning ✔️ Identified a clear, underserved market segment for XX Company to target ✔️ Delivered board-ready findings, not just a spreadsheet of raw research What this demonstrates: Strong primary and secondary research skills Structured competitive benchmarking methodology Insight-driven, recommendation-focused thinking — not just data collection Ability to support real strategic decisions with evidence 📂 Deliverables: Benchmarking workbook (.xlsx), summary presentation (.pptx)
