EL CÍRCULO - a theater play full production

I got the opportunity to work with the theater play called "El Círculo" (The Circle), written and directed by Natalia Cabral, marking her directorial debut. In this, we work together on how to convey the story through photos and videos, to attract people to the theater. But first, I guess we need to understand what it is about.

What is the play about?

The kitchen is the heart of the home, of a family, of a mother and her daughter. There, meals represent all the love one can give, even when it’s hard to say it out loud. During the preparation of dinner, Claudia and Julia confront their relationship. Little by little, through parallels with the meal being cooked and direct interaction with the audience, long-suppressed feelings and truths begin to surface. This confrontation is expressed through Sofía, who, between live painting and the memories that haunt her, reveals the emotions and thoughts held inside by Claudia and Julia.

The play explores themes such as the passions we leave behind, the ways we adapt to life, human relationships, politics, and our existence within it all.

The staging includes a camera that records the dinner as it’s being cooked. It also uses audiovisual material created specifically for the play, as well as archival footage, which is displayed through a television screen. The soundscape, entirely original, was composed for this and performed live, serving as a bridge between the actresses, their emotions, their dialogue, and the audiovisual material.
Seeing ourselves as a society is essential. That is our goal: to accept what stands before us as it is, almost automatically, but also to provoke a civic awakening, a call to action.

What was my role?

I worked closely with Natalia to capture the right feeling through the images and video. Her idea was that everything should be red, the color of passion, but also with a political meaning behind it.
With the help of Camilo Sánchez on lighting, we took some great photos and recorded all the shots for the trailer. The lighting was set up to evoke a sense of mystery about what’s going to happen in the play, making you feel compelled to go and see it.

Editing process

For the trailer, the music was already picked before the shoot from Artlist, so we had in mind how we needed to place everything during the shoot according to the song.
While editing the photos, I realized that all three characters had a color assigned to them. This was something that wasn't planned, but really was obvious while editing. The tones were pure red, a mix of red and orange, and red with yellow.

This was perfectly in sync with the script because every character had an undertone that needed to be told, so this was a welcome addition to the edit.

Final results

More than 300 people came to the alternative theater Sala La Correa over the 6 days it ran. It was really well received and got tons of praise.

El Círculo by Natalia Cabral. I co-directed and edited the trailer and photos, building a red-toned visual of passion, politics, and mystery.
