In 2022, I was commissioned to create a video course on inclusive language in academic environments by online learning provider and higher education community site Academia.edu.
I presented, filmed, edited, and wrote the video series, which explores a range of ideas about inclusive language in academic spaces, thinking about how to welcome and include students from a variety of backgrounds.
With lessons covering Race, Gender, Class and Disability, as well an overview of Inclusive Practice and an introduction to inclusive language, this course helps learners to think more carefully about the language they use in supervisions, lectures, written resources and more. Inclusion shouldn't be seen as a minefield or a test - it's a positive opportunity to welcome students into your space and take into consideration how best to include everybody in academic conversation, and this course will helps to equip learners with some great strategies for doing so.
By taking a broad and pragmatic view of this topic, this course helps learners to feel more confident discussing identity experiences with fellow staff and students. This course is designed to be accessible and interesting to all academic staff, even if they themselves identify as part of a traditionally excluded group.
The course covers the following topics:
What the purposes and benefits of inclusive practice are
How to centre inclusive language within their academic practice
Some of the historical and social context for language around identity experiences, such as race, gender and so on
How to describe and talk about those identity experiences in appropriate and current language
What language to potentially avoid or interrogate in order to best include and welcome all student experiences
