The Brief

An author publishing through Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) platform needed a book cover that would stand out in a crowded marketplace. The cover had to work at both full size and as a tiny Amazon thumbnail, where most buying decisions happen in a split second.

Design Approach

Book cover design for Amazon KDP comes with specific constraints. The cover needs to meet Amazon's exact dimension and resolution requirements, look compelling at thumbnail scale, and communicate the book's genre and tone instantly.
The design process started with understanding the book's subject matter, target audience, and competitive landscape on Amazon. From there, the visual direction was built around bold imagery, strong typographic hierarchy, and a color palette that pops against Amazon's white background.

KDP-Specific Optimization

Every design decision was filtered through the KDP lens. Title readability at thumbnail size was tested repeatedly. The spine width was calculated based on page count. The back cover layout was structured to accommodate the barcode placement Amazon requires.
The final cover was delivered in both digital (ebook) and print-ready (paperback) formats, each optimized for their respective platform requirements.

Deliverables

Front cover design (ebook and print versions)
Back cover and spine layout for paperback
KDP-compliant file specifications (exact dimensions, resolution, bleed)
Thumbnail-optimized version for Amazon listings
Print-ready PDF with proper trim and bleed marks
Source files (AI, PSD) for future editions
