Surveys:
I wanted to determine how many people currently recycled, how many of those people recycled due to local requirements, what were the reasons people don't recycle.
I also wanted to guage their thoughts on smart appliances as well as the importance of kids learning about recycling & waste reduction.
Finally, I provided a picture as an example of the current system in Japan, as my thought process going into this was heavily inspired by Japan's in-depth and highly efficient waste & recycling system.
Problem Statement:
The Design Process
Sketches & User Flows:
I wanted to keep it to 4 very short & simple user flows:
Adding a new device
Viewing device stats
Removing a device
Viewing your profile
Sketches:
Style Guide:
Very minimal style guide, only focused on the immediate basics.
Overall, I wanted to go for a sketchy brutalism look and feel for the app.

Conclusion & Final Thoughts:
I believe that with a system like this, people will be much more likely to recycle regularly
The color coded system and visual cues make it easier to know what and how to sort each type of waste
The rewards and tiers offer incentive to keep up the habit
A system like this will also be effective for getting kids involved because of the color coding and visual cues - children can remember what each color means and the images on the bins will aide in identifying and sorting.
