Security surveillance is a priority for domestic and commercial structures. The motive is to keep a
check on movements happening around and keep a track record for future reference. The availability of
gadgets with all the latest features is in abundance, in the market. This gets the end-user with multiple
choice and confusion about what product would be the best.
Let’s understand the basic difference between DVR and NVR security system.
DVR means Digital Video Recorder and NVR means Network Video Recorder.
DVR uses analog cameras and NVR uses standalone IP cameras.
Select DVR Security system only if:
• Wired connection is not a hassle.
If you are least bothered about the cables connecting the different CCTV cameras in
your premises and not willing to relocate the cameras.
• The distance between cameras and DVR is less than 1000 feet.
The quality of the signals gets lower with the distance, hence advisable to keep the
capturing device within 1000 ft. of DVR.
• Willing to get the stable signal capability.
Wires are used to connect cameras and the data transmission stays unaffected with
the usage of electronic devices, unlike the wireless connection where the connection
is hampered.
• Want to make sure that the network bandwidth is not consumed.
Internet network Is not utilized as DVR works on its own, so the network bandwidth
is not used. Simply means the internet connection is unaffected.
• Want to install a pocket-friendly security system.
Analog cameras are equipped with fewer features as compared to IP cameras and
therefore are cheaper.
Select the NVR Security system only if:
• Want to have a flexible camera location.
The basic requirement is to connect all the devices on the same network, once
connected the position of cameras can be changed anytime but just be sure to keep it in
limits of your network range. If you have a large area to cover and the network range seems
too less, the go with some network range extenders.
• Want to get higher quality recording capability.
The usage of HD cameras makes it more convenient to get HD video recording. Low-quality cameras
may not solve the purpose as the recording may not be clear.
• The setup procedure is easier and doesn’t require a long time for installation.
Just find a suitable location for the camera, connect the camera to the network and
start capturing.
• Network bandwidth is high, and the regular traffic does not get affected.
The internet network is supposed to be at a good speed to carry the data packets of
video recording.
The above-mentioned basics of both the security systems would make it easier to understand the
functionality.
