The question

A client encountered a claim that had been repeated across multiple sources: articles, blog posts, social media, AI-generated summaries, and recommendation threads. The claim appeared well established. It showed up in enough places that it felt like settled fact.
But the client noticed something. The sources referencing the claim didn't seem to be citing independent evidence. They appeared to be citing each other, or citing a common secondary source, or stating the claim without any citation at all. The repetition was extensive. The underlying evidence was not.
The client's question for Facthread: "I keep seeing this claim repeated everywhere. Does it actually hold up?"
That's a Verify question. Not "research this topic for me." Not "find me information about this subject." Instead: here is a specific assertion that already exists in the world. Trace it to its sources. Evaluate the evidence. Tell me what the record actually supports.

Why repetition isn't verification

There's a pattern that shows up constantly in online information: a claim appears in one place, gets picked up by a second source, gets summarized by a third, gets cited by a fourth, and eventually shows up in AI-generated answers as though it were established fact. By the time someone encounters it, the claim has dozens of apparent references.
But apparent references aren't the same as independent evidence.
The distinction matters:
Repetition means multiple sources state the same claim. It tells you the claim is widely circulated. It does not tell you the claim is accurate.
Independent corroboration means multiple sources arrive at the same conclusion through separate evidence or observation. It tells you the claim has support from more than one direction.
A claim repeated by 50 sources that all trace back to a single unsourced blog post has exactly one piece of evidence behind it, regardless of how many times it's been restated. A claim corroborated by two independent primary sources with no connection to each other has stronger evidentiary support than one repeated by thousands.
The Verify's job is to determine which situation applies: is the claim supported by independent evidence, or is it supported by repetition?

Tracing the claim

The methodology follows a structured path from the claim as encountered back toward its evidentiary foundation:
1. Identify the strongest version of the claim. Claims shift as they're repeated. Details get added, dropped, or altered. The first step is to identify the most specific, most falsifiable version of the claim and use that as the subject of evaluation. Vague versions are harder to assess; precise versions can be checked against evidence.
2. Trace citations backward. Starting from the sources the client encountered, follow the citation trail. Does Source A cite Source B? Does Source B cite Source C? Does Source C cite anything at all? The goal is to find where the trail originates: the earliest, most direct, or most authoritative source making the claim.
3. Locate primary or original material where available. When the citation trail leads to an identifiable original source (a study, an official record, a direct statement, a dataset, a primary document), that source is located and evaluated directly. When the trail dead-ends at an unsourced assertion, that's documented too.
4. Distinguish independent evidence from repetition. For each source in the trail, determine whether it contributes independent evidence or merely restates what another source already said. Two articles citing the same study are one piece of evidence, not two. Two studies reaching the same conclusion through different data are two pieces of evidence.
5. Document the source trail. Every step is recorded: which sources were consulted, what each cited, where the trail led, and where it stopped. The client receives the trail, not just the conclusion.

Evaluating the evidence

Once the source trail is mapped, the evidence is evaluated. This isn't a binary true/false determination. It's an assessment of what the available record supports, with attention to:
Source quality. How direct is the evidence? A primary document carries more weight than a secondhand summary. An official record carries more weight than an anonymous post. A peer-reviewed study carries more weight than a press release about a study.
Directness. Does the source actually say what it's being cited to say? Mischaracterization is common: a source might be cited as proving a claim when it actually says something narrower, more qualified, or different entirely.
Chronology. When did the claim first appear? When did the evidence it relies on originate? Does the timeline make sense, or does the claim predate the evidence supposedly supporting it?
Context. Is the claim accurate in isolation but misleading without context? Are qualifications, limitations, or conditions being omitted in how the claim is repeated?
Corroboration. Does independent evidence from separate sources support the same conclusion? Or does the appearance of corroboration dissolve when you trace the sources back to a common origin?
Contradictions. Does any credible evidence contradict the claim? If so, how strong is the contradicting evidence relative to the supporting evidence?
Gaps. What evidence would you expect to exist if the claim were true, and is that evidence present or absent? What can't be determined from available sources?

Illustrative sample finding

Illustrative fictional example. The claim, statistic, organizations, publications, and sources below are invented solely to demonstrate the structure of a Facthread Verification Brief.

Claim Reviewed: "Research has shown that structured decision frameworks reduce project failure rates by 40%."

Strongest Available Source: The earliest identifiable source for this claim is a 2019 summary article on a project-management blog. The article attributes the statistic to "a study by the Linden Institute" but does not provide a direct citation, DOI, publication name, or link to the study.

Supporting Evidence: The Linden Institute (fictional) published a 2018 white paper titled "Decision Frameworks in Practice" that discusses structured decision-making in organizational contexts. The white paper includes survey data from participating organizations and reports that respondents using structured frameworks "reported fewer project delays and scope changes." The white paper does not state a 40% figure. It does not measure "project failure rates" as a defined metric. The survey methodology, sample size, and response criteria are not described in the publicly available version of the document.

A 2020 article in the Journal of Applied Decision Science (fictional) cites the Linden Institute white paper and states that "structured frameworks have been associated with significant reductions in project failure." This article also does not state a 40% figure. It characterizes the Linden Institute findings as "preliminary" and notes that "controlled studies isolating the effect of decision frameworks on project outcomes remain limited."

Subsequent sources citing the 40% statistic trace back to the 2019 blog summary, not to the Linden Institute white paper or the journal article. Several sources cite each other rather than any primary material.

Contradicting or Limiting Evidence: The Linden Institute white paper's own findings are narrower than the claim as repeated. The white paper reports self-assessed improvements in "delays and scope changes" among survey respondents, not a measured reduction in "project failure rates." The 40% figure does not appear in any primary or secondary source located during the source-trail reconstruction.

The Journal of Applied Decision Science article explicitly characterizes the evidence base as "preliminary" and notes the absence of controlled studies.

Missing Context: The claim as widely repeated presents a precise statistic (40%) and a specific outcome metric ("project failure rates") that do not appear in the underlying source material. The original research, to the extent it can be identified, measured something different (self-reported delays and scope changes) using a methodology that is not fully described in publicly available documents. The transformation from qualified survey findings to a precise, unqualified statistic appears to have occurred in the secondary source layer, not in the primary research.

Assessment: Misleading

The claim contains a factual core: research exists suggesting that structured decision frameworks are associated with improved project outcomes. However, the specific statistic (40%), the specific metric ("project failure rates"), and the unqualified framing ("research has shown") are not supported by the identifiable source material. The claim as repeated overstates and mischaracterizes the underlying evidence.

Confidence: Moderate

The source trail was traceable to identifiable primary and secondary materials. The disconnect between the claim as repeated and the underlying evidence is clear and documented. Confidence is moderate rather than high because the Linden Institute white paper's full methodology is not publicly available, leaving open the possibility that unpublished portions of the research contain findings closer to the repeated claim. No evidence of such findings was located.

The deliverable is a concise, source-backed assessment. Not an open-ended investigation. Not a research paper. A clear answer to the question: does this claim hold up, and what's the evidence?

Why this matters

Facthread does not set out to prove or disprove the client's preferred conclusion. The objective is to determine what the available evidence supports.
Sometimes the evidence confirms the claim. Sometimes it contradicts it. Sometimes the claim is technically accurate but misleading without context. Sometimes the evidence is genuinely insufficient to reach a conclusion, and the honest answer is "uncertain."
All of those are useful findings. Knowing that a claim is well supported saves the client from unnecessary doubt. Knowing that a claim is unsupported or misleading saves them from acting on bad information. Knowing that the evidence is genuinely uncertain saves them from false confidence in either direction.
The value is clarity about what the record actually says, documented with sources the client can check themselves.
