Dosanjh, Narveen, and Narveen Dosanjh. “Men and the Stigma of Mental Illness.” The Good Men Project, 30 Nov. 2017, https://goodmenproject.com/featured-content/men-and-the-stigma-of-mental-illness-dg/
Dr. Dosanjh works at her private practice in Manhattan, New York City as an integrated psychiatrist. Not only is she a psychiatrist, she is also an author, speaker, meditator, metaphysical spiritual teacher and a women's empowerment workshop leader. Her main arguments are mostly about how and why men are having mental health issues and why it should become a more serious topic in today’s world. She argues that men who come to her office for help were either forced to go by a loved one or are going for couple’s therapy. It is not hard to agree with that statement because unfortunately, I do not know any men who go to therapy willingly.
“Infographic: Mental Health for Men.” Mental Health America, 23 June 2015, www.mentalhealthamerica.net/infographic-mental-health-men
This source is from Mental Health America, a website that provides a lot of information on all types of mental health issues. MHA is a community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to helping those in need of mental health assistance. The main topics that the article covers are the main mental health problems affecting men, fast facts on suicide, substance abuse, famous athletes dealing with mental health, the science of male mental health, and how to seek treatment. It is noted that 79% of suicides in America are males and I found that surprising.
Levine, David. “How Can Men Fight the Stigma of Dealing With Mental Health Problems?” U.S. News & World Report, U.S. News & World Report, 9 Feb. 2018, https://health.usnews.com/health-care/patient-advice/articles/2018-02-09/how-can-men-fight-the-stigma-of-dealing-with-mental-health-problems
This article is on U.S. News written by David Levine. David Levine is a very successful writer on the topic of mental health. He currently writes for a variety of digital agencies such as Health Monitor, American Healthcare Leader, Advancing Care, and others. His main topics in the article are barriers, symptoms, causes, and psychiatry hospitals. One thing that caught me off guard was his sentence, “Another way to encourage men to take action is with humor.” Personally, I believe joking about mental health is not funny but after reading his explanation on how some men may find it helpful, it changed my opinion. If something works for that person suffering, then why not? The purpose of this article is to explain how men can be treated and how they can be encouraged to seek help.
Whitley, Rob. “Men's Mental Health: A Silent Crisis.” Psychology Today, Sussex Publishers, 6 Feb. 2017, www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/talking-about-men/201702/mens-mental-health-silent-crisis
This source is from Psychology Today written by Rob Whitley. Rob Whitley is the Principal Investigator of the Social Psychiatry Research and Interest Group at the Douglas Hospital Research Center and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at McGill University. His main arguments are about suicide, substance abuse, the utilization of mental health services, and solutions. He argues that “men’s mental health should be recognized as a social issue as much as a health issue” and continues to say that issues such as unemployment should be warning signs. I agree with this because it shows a different light on people who are unemployed and are often referred to as “lazy” when there may be a more serious underlying issue present. The purpose of this article is to dive deeper into the facts of the seriousness behind men struggling with mental health.
