In 2020, McDonald's gave up on giving us healthy options in America. Yep, when we
were all staying at home, they took the salads, grilled chicken, and yogurt off the menu.
And considering that McDonald's is sometimes the easiest and cheapest option in many
communities, that's a shame. But rest assured, McDonald's didn’t give up on healthy
food everywhere. In other parts of the world, they kept healthy options, plus a few more,
on their menus.
So let's take a look at the countries around the globe where McDonald's is offering
healthy options. Stay tuned to the end to see their healthy alternative to the Big Mac,
and you’ll never guess which country it's available in.
#1 Japan
It's not really surprising to me that Japan has healthy options on their menu, considering
that they have some of the longest-living humans on the planet. McDonald's couldn't
just offer them burgers and fries. While they have plenty of classic fast food options,
they did make some concessions. Not only did they keep a salad as an alternative to
fries on the menu, but they also have something called Edamame and Corn, served hot,
which comes closer to curbing those fry cravings. Oh, and if you are trying to be extra
good, they have yogurt for dessert. No, not parfaits pretending to be yogurt, just plain
yogurt.
#2 Italy
With Italy taking the prize for the healthiest country in 2023, McDonald's must have felt
guilty not to add to the accomplishment. Now, this healthy addition to their menu is
more for the kiddos (okay, and maybe the young at heart). Instead of offering apple
slices with their Happy Meal as an alternative to fries, they add choices like carrot sticks
and, get this, pineapple wedges. Oh, and did I mention they also have Parmigiano
Reggiano cheese blocks for a protein boost? All of which are extra helpful when you're
trying to convince a toddler to make a healthier choice in the middle of a fast-food joint.
So while they do have something called the Tasty Basketball (yes, you heard that right),
at least they're making an effort.
#3 Norway
If you're like me, when you think of food from Norway, fish, potatoes, or bread come to
mind. So, a healthy option like Bulgur wouldn’t be what you’d expect on their
McDonald’s menu. But this Middle Eastern grain is part of their stepped-up version of
salad, which I have to say looks pretty tempting. Ironically, Norway is special because
this salad isn’t available in Turkey or Lebanon, where you’d expect this to be offered. Go
figure.
#4 Singapore
Speaking of salads, Singapore seems to have kept theirs on the menu. I'm not trying to
make Americans jealous, but Singapore seems to have all of the healthy items we used
to. They have the grilled chicken salad, grilled chicken wrap, and a plain garden-side
salad. I also noticed that their menu has a whole section of complete meals that are
under 500 calories. How nice! Looks like they took all the guesswork out of eating
healthy at McDonald's.
#5 Finland
Now, many of you watching this video might be thinking that salads and fruit are great,
but what about a replacement for the Big Mac? Well, in Finland, they have a healthy
substitution called the Rye McVegan, which McDonald's claims is the most popular
vegan burger in Finland. It's a 100% plant-based soy burger complete with all the fixings
sandwiched between a rye bread bun, hence the name. Strangely enough, they offer a
similar sandwich called the Rye Fresh as a breakfast alternative to the McMuffins. It
looks almost the same but comes with cheese and a bit more calories. But for my vegan
friends, I doubt they appreciate the cheese addition.
So there you have it, all of the healthy items McDonald's offers away from home. But I'm
curious, what do you wish they’d offer in the States? Did anything look tempting, or are
you happy with the burger and fries? And while you're at it, if you liked this content,
please subscribe. We have more videos about health and food on the way. But until next
time, remember, we try to eat healthy today to be healthy tomorrow… except maybe not
at McDonald's… lol.
