Situation
The Incorporated Council of Law Reporting for Queensland (ICLRQ) runs queenslandreports.com.au, the authoritative source for the Queensland Reports, the Queensland Law Reporter, and public legal notices — a site relied on by lawyers, court staff, and the legal profession across the state. Sitting behind this public-facing site was the ICLRQ Online Customer Portal: the login-gated system through which subscribers manage accounts, lodge public notices (probate, admission, and other legal notices), and handle payments and invoices.
The portal's interface had aged well behind the expectations of its professional user base. Login and account flows, notice drafting and lodgement, and payment/invoice management were functional but visually and structurally outdated — creating friction for a userbase (legal practitioners and court administrators) that needed speed and clarity, not a dated enterprise-software feel.
Task
As lead UX/UI designer, I was brought in to redesign the ICLRQ Online Customer Portal experience end-to-end, covering:
Login and registration
Public notice drafting and lodgement (probate, admission, and other legal/public notices)
Payments and invoice management
Account/profile management
The goal was to modernize the portal's UX and visual language while preserving the trust, formality, and clarity expected of a legal institution — without disrupting the existing public-facing brand of Queensland Reports.
Action
Audited the existing portal flows — login, notice lodgement, and payments — to identify friction points in navigation, form structure, and visual hierarchy.
Reframed the core user journeys around the portal's three primary jobs-to-be-done: log in and manage my account , draft and lodge a notice , and pay and track invoices — simplifying navigation around these rather than the legacy menu structure.
Redesigned key interface screens , including the login/dashboard entry point, the notice preparation and lodgement flow, and account/invoice management, focusing on clearer form design, reduced cognitive load, and more scannable layouts suited to a professional legal audience.
Established a consistent visual language for the portal that aligned with the institutional credibility of ICLRQ while feeling current — clean typography, clear status/error states, and more readable information hierarchy for dense legal-administrative content.
Worked within a compressed timeline of a few weeks, prioritizing high-impact screens and flows over exhaustive redesign, to deliver a usable, shippable improvement quickly.
Result
The redesigned portal was well received qualitatively by the client and its users — feedback highlighted the improved clarity and modernized feel of the login, notice lodgement, and payment experiences compared to the legacy system. While formal quantitative metrics weren't tracked for this engagement, the project strengthened ICLRQ's digital presence as a modern, trustworthy institution and served as a foundation for further iterations of the portal experience.
