Award Winning Sonnet

Sadie Wilke

This is a poem I wrote and submitted to a competition in which I was hand-selected as a winner. The picture is the cover I created for the sonnet.
Each night I gaze upon the brilliant blue,
and question it why my mind is aching.
Assure me other youth too are breaking!
Oh dark night, why can't I be perfect too?
I fake a simple smile to make it through,
but always wonder who else is shaking.
I ask the sky what error I'm making; it breathes back with a voice as pure as dew:
"Love, you are far more precious than the night.
External beauty won't heal what you feel.
Despite your heartbreak, you aren't a mistake.
Your father chose you to be his bright light. The thieving shadows of midnight can't steal
your joy which conquers the night like day-break.
