M+ commissioned a comprehensive motion design suite for the landmark exhibition Picasso for Asia. The project demanded a highly adaptive visual language capable of scaling across four vastly different physical and digital touchpoints—balancing the weight of historical fine art with contemporary museum presentation.
01 / In-Gallery Explainer Video
The core educational anchor displayed inside the exhibition space. The final asset relies on structured pacing to guide visitors through dense historical context. Below are the initial collage-style style frames created during the pitching phase; though ultimately unused in favor of a cleaner direction, they explored a heavily textured, layered approach to Picasso’s work.
02 / Typographic Entrance Loop
Situated at the physical entrance of the exhibition to greet visitors. The final execution is a minimalist text animation set against a plain background, ensuring maximum legibility and architectural neutrality. Also included below are the alternative, unused collage-style style frames developed for this asset.
03 / Online Promotional Video
The motion here focused on character fluidity and playful transitions. Below is a behind-the-scenes look at the technical layout, showcasing the custom After Effects rigs built to animate Picasso and his iconic dove.
03 / M+ Facade Animation
Designed specifically for the massive scale of the museum's outdoor LED display facing Victoria Harbour. Built entirely within After Effects, this required plain, high-contrast motion graphics, relying on bold geometric layouts and massive type scales optimized for distance viewing.
Post-Mortem
Executing a four-tier deliverable for a major cultural institution meant shifting design gears constantly—moving from intricate character rigging in After Effects to massive, flat vector layouts for the facade. Navigating the gap between the experimental, unused collage concepts and the clean, functional final deliverables highlights the necessity of designing for the specific physical space the audience occupies.
