Resilient API: Rate Limiting & Error Handling

Marcela Zapata

Marcela Zapata

Overview

Personal project: a Node.js and Express API that combines rate limiting with customer-facing error handling, keeping backend safeguards understandable for people using the service.

What I built

API rate limiting configured for 5 requests per minute.
Human-readable JSON responses for rate limits, server errors, and missing routes.
Global error middleware that prevents sensitive stack traces from reaching the public response.
Test endpoints for a successful request, a simulated server failure, and a custom 404 response.

Technical decision

The project treats API resilience and user experience as connected concerns. Protective controls remain in place while responses give client developers clear, actionable feedback instead of generic failures.

Stack

Node.js, Express.js, JavaScript, and express-rate-limit.

The source code and local setup instructions are available on GitHub.
