Hi friends!
As promised in last week’s blog, today I am sharing a beginner-friendly pattern for these boho inspired sunflower drink coasters. It took me a couple of tries to get them just right, but I figured it out fairly easily, so I know this will be a simple one for beginners to accomplish.
I was inspired to create these simple yet beautiful little coasters over the weekend while sitting out on my back swing one evening. I have a garden with a variety of vegetables and herbs, and I also have a plethora of flowers growing everywhere in my yard as well, with a variety of sunflowers throughout. The sun was setting and I was enjoying the sound of my kid’s laughing as they explored together, and sitting out there in nature with my kids has always been my happy place, but it just felt especially peaceful and happy out there as I gazed out at my freshly watered, evening sun-bathed flowers.
As I sat there enjoying all of this, I was also pondering what I would create for you this week, and my flowers gave me the inspiration to create something sunflower related. Some of you might laugh a little at me for being so awe-inspired by things in my yard, but something about being out there, especially in the early mornings and late evenings always give me something to take back into the house with me, be it inspiration, new motivation, or new goodies for the table.
As my regular readers know, I typically stick to using cotton yarn for a large portion of my projects. But for this project, I opted for an acrylic blend, simply because they don’t absorb as much liquid as cotton does, so if you’re using your coaster for a cold drink, the condensation from it isn’t going to drench your coaster and leave marks on your table. (Which is the point of a coaster in the first place, right?) They also don’t get as hot as cotton does, so if you’ve got your hot coffee or tea sitting on it, it isn’t going to create any heat on your table either.
These sunflower coasters are about 5 inches in circumference, depending on your gauge, and would be a great addition to your table. These would also make a great house-warming gift, or even just a neat little project to add to your collection.
I used a 4mm crochet hook, and four different colors of yarn. I used brown for the center, dark red for the inner ring of the flower, dark orange for the middle ring, and then of course yellow, for the remaining rounds of the petals.
However, if you only have brown and yellow, or whatever color you’re feeling like your sunflowers should be today, just omit the part in the instructions that indicate a color change, and continue crocheting straight through.
As always, my patterns are free, although they do contain ads. If you prefer to have a downloadable version that is ad-free, I’ve included the links to my Ravelry and Etsy shops where you can purchase those.
