As a design engineer, I created a fully functional, intelligent Pomodoro-style focus timer from the ground up using Bolt AI—focusing on crafting a seamless and adaptive user experience for productivity enhancement. This project was born out of a need for a minimalist yet powerful tool to help creatives, developers, and remote workers structure their work sessions more effectively, with built-in flexibility and subtle automation.
I approached this project not just as a developer but as a designer deeply invested in the intersection of habit-building and UX. Every detail—from the timer animations to how sessions are tracked and nudged—was considered through the lens of usability, behavior psychology, and visual harmony.
🚀 Concept & Goals
The goal was simple: build a tool that respects attention. Most productivity timers are either too complex or too sterile. I wanted to build something intuitive but intelligent—something that would feel invisible while still keeping you anchored in flow. Using the Pomodoro technique (25 minutes focused work, 5-minute breaks), the timer helps users chunk their work into manageable sessions.
But I didn’t stop at a basic timer. I wanted to leverage Bolt AI to give the tool an edge—adding adaptive feedback and session intelligence, enabling it to respond subtly to user habits over time.
🛠️ Engineering & Implementation
Built entirely using Bolt AI’s no-code/low-code environment, the app leverages logic blocks, API integrations, custom states, and design flows to create a cohesive and intelligent experience.
Key features I engineered:
Custom Timer Logic: I built a stateful session manager that tracks work and break intervals, including long breaks after every four sessions. The timer uses precise interval calculations with fallback mechanisms to ensure session integrity even in low-resource environments.
Session History & Stats: The app stores recent session data and displays simple analytics—helping users reflect on their focus patterns without overwhelming them with data.
Smart Nudges: With Bolt AI’s conditional logic, I designed contextual nudges that encourage users to take breaks, resume sessions, or stay on task—always gently and never intrusively.
Theme & Aesthetic Modes: I implemented light and dark mode compatibility, as well as minimal, ambient animations that reinforce time awareness without distracting from work.
Responsive UI: The design adapts fluidly across devices—whether you're on desktop, tablet, or mobile, the experience remains smooth and unobtrusive.
🎨 Design Philosophy
My background in design engineering deeply informed the look and feel. I leaned into calming tones, soft transitions, and tactile interactions—making the timer feel more like a trusted companion than a digital stopwatch.
I prototyped flows in Figma and mirrored them closely in Bolt, ensuring design fidelity across every screen. Microinteractions, button haptics, and progress indicators all serve a purpose—to give the user just the right amount of feedback at the right time.
🧠 AI-Driven Personalization
What sets this timer apart is the subtle use of AI. Bolt’s decision logic and dynamic content capabilities allowed me to tailor reminders and session feedback based on how often the user works, how long their breaks tend to be, and when they most often lose focus. It’s lightweight behavioral intelligence—not surveillance—designed to support, not control.
Outcome
The result is a clean, adaptive, and user-centered focus timer that brings together strong design systems, thoughtful engineering, and ethical AI. It’s not just another productivity tool—it’s a rhythm keeper, a habit assistant, and a calm layer of structure in a world full of distractions.
I built this myself from end to end, and I’m proud of how it balances simplicity and intelligence. This project showcases my ability to blend UX design, systems thinking, and no-code engineering into a product that serves people’s real-world needs.
