Chapter One
This was a dream. A sick, twisted dream. It had to be. Elyse trembled, taking in her father’s features and it made her want to vomit. Her eyes snagged on his familiar scars, pausing on the newer ones. How could this be possible? Her father eyed her with caution as if she were a wounded animal. As if she would incinerate him at any moment. Perhaps she should.
Akara’s voice broke the trance as she stomped through the tent, the canvas flaps opening with a harsh smack. Two other men trailed after her, their faces pinched in annoyance. “Where the hell is my mate–” She froze, the blood and gore still caked to her body crumbled a bit with the sudden stop. Elyse could see the wheels turning in her head, looking between herself and Elyse’s father, the pieces clicking into place. She crossed her arms, “You’ve got some explaining to do.”
Gareth placed a hand on Elyse’s back, steadying her. He kept silent, a solid force and unified front. Akara took up her other side, waiting expectantly for whatever her father could scrounge up as a response. Elyse could barely contain the anger rumbling under her skin, begging to be let out. She tightened the damper on it, she refused to explode until she heard him out. She deserved that much before she unleashed herself. As if sensing Elyse’s writhing magic, Tripp and Uriah shifted closer to her father. Good, it would be a shame if there wasn’t much of a fight when she tore them all to shreds.
