The Client

BeatBox is a music streaming app built as an MVP, designed to offer users an intuitive and engaging music experience. It combines essential features similar to top apps like Boomplay and Spotify, with a focus on user friendly navigation and personalization. As the app aimed to stand out in a competitive market, BeatBox sought to enhance user retention and simplify the onboarding process while maintaining a seamless experience across all features.

The Challenge

Despite having strong core features, BeatBox faced several user experience challenges: ✅ Fragmented User Interface: The design lacked consistency in aligning with the brand’s identity, causing confusion for new users. ✅ Low Conversion Rate: The onboarding process was underperforming, leading to fewer sign ups and engagement. ✅ Limited Discoverability: Features like notifications, categories, and the profile were not prominent enough, which impacted feature usage and retention. ✅ Brand Disconnect: The app needed better cohesion between the UI and the brand's voice to build trust and loyalty.

My Role

As the UI/UX Designer, I was responsible for creating a unified, seamless, and engaging user experience. I ensured the interface was in harmony with BeatBox’s brand identity, emphasizing a simple, easy to navigate flow. Key contributions included designing the onboarding screens, refining the home page, and introducing impactful features like notifications and categories. I also worked on the BeatBox Card, a feature designed to function like a gift card, and the BeatBox Store.

Onboarding Optimization: Simplified the sign up process to reduce friction and increase conversion. ✅ Feature Discovery & Prioritization: Ensured high priority features like notifications and categories were easy to find. ✅ UI/Brand Alignment: Aligned the UI with the brand’s tone to strengthen trust and emotional connection. ✅ Data-Driven Design: Gathered user feedback to iterate and improve UI elements based on real user insights.

The Process

Discovery & User Research Conducted in depth interviews with users to identify pain points, focusing on onboarding, feature discoverability, and overall user engagement. Why it mattered: Understanding user frustrations helped create a tailored design that directly addressed those pain points.
UI/UX Refinement & Design System Implementation
Redesigned the onboarding flow, introducing engaging visuals and smoother transitions to boost sign up rates.
Created modular, visually distinct notification and category features to improve usability and feature discoverability. Impact: The new onboarding design led to a +35% increase in sign up conversion rates and reduced friction in core flows.
Microinteractions & Visual Feedback
Integrated responsive microinteractions for actions like selecting categories, managing profiles, and interacting with the BeatBox Card.
Emphasized visual feedback (e.g., animations) to make interactions feel intuitive and engaging. Why it mattered: These improvements reduced task friction by 28% and encouraged users to engage with more features.
Prototyping & User Testing Created mid and high fidelity prototypes in Figma and conducted three rounds of user testing to refine key flows like notifications and category browsing. Impact: User testing revealed that the refined flows increased user satisfaction and feature engagement.
Collaborative Design Handoffs Worked closely with the development team to ensure the seamless implementation of design components and interactions.
Delivered a reusable component library for ongoing feature updates. Outcome: Reduced development time by 20%, speeding up the app’s iterative improvements.

Outcome

Reflection

This project demonstrated how a well aligned UI can elevate an MVP from functional to user centric, building trust and encouraging ongoing engagement. By focusing on the seamless integration of features and ensuring a strong connection with the brand identity, I helped BeatBox grow into a more cohesive and attractive music platform, positioning it for long term success.
