Project Overview

Tantrum AI is an AI-powered parenting companion app for iOS that supports parents in real-time during toddler meltdowns. The app acts like an on-demand “tantrum coach,” offering tailored guidance, gentle language prompts, calming strategies and behavior-insight tools. My role focused on the AI and full-stack development, leading the app’s intelligent response engine, backend infrastructure, and overall system integration between the frontend and AI models.

Objectives & Challenges

Objectives:
Enable parents to record a tantrum as it happens and receive real-time, step-by-step de-escalation guidance.
Design a user interface that is calm, responsive and intuitive, particularly under high-stress usage (i.e., toddler meltdown).
Incorporate AI-tailored advice based on child’s personality, parent dynamics, and context (store aisle, bedtime, etc).
Provide features like soothing phrases, calm-down techniques, brief parent “patience boosters” and behavior insights.
Challenges:
Designing for chaotic usage conditions: parents may be distracted, stressed, in non-ideal environments, so UI/UX must be extremely accessible.
Ensuring real-time responsiveness: the “record tantrum and get guidance” flow needs to feel immediate, smooth, reliable.
Balancing technology and empathy: making sure the AI advice feels personal, compassionate—but also actionable.

My Approach

UX & User Flow Design I mapped key user journeys: from “tantrum starts → parent opens app → record/triggers guidance → follow suggestions → post-tantrum reflection”. I prioritised minimal friction: big buttons, quick access, low cognitive load for the parent.
UI Implementation & Frontend Build Using a modern mobile frontend tech stack, I implemented the screens: recording mode, guidance mode, calm-down modules, behaviour-insight dashboards. I focused on accessible button sizing, clear typography, visual cues signalling calm. I worked closely with the AI backend team to integrate the real-time guidance engine: the frontend triggers the right analyses, fetches tailored messaging and presents it in human-friendly form.
Performance & Usability Optimisation Recognising that parents may use the app under stress with perhaps one hand, maybe in low-light or rushed situations.
Refinement & Real-World Context We added features like “quick widget from lock screen” (which allows the user to start recording a tantrum with one tap) to reduce the friction of launching the app mid-meltdown. Also: calm-down techniques (breathing games, sensory strategies) and parent-focused “guilt busters” acknowledging that tantrums are a normal part of child development.

Results & Impact

The app launched on the App Store with the core SOS functionality and has been well-received by users for its practical, human-centred approach to toddler tantrums.
User feedback highlights how the guided phrases, real-time advice and calming modules helped parents feel more confident rather than overwhelmed.
The UI/UX design met the goal of “accessible in the moment” — the app loads quickly, drops parents into actionable guidance with minimal steps.
Feature optimisations (like lock-screen widget) helped reduce latency of access and improved adoption of the “in-the-moment” use case.

Key Learnings & Reflections

Designing for high-stress, real-life usage (parenting meltdown context) demands more empathy and fewer features — focus on one big, meaningful flow.
Real-time features require excellent performance optimization and error handling: if the app lags during a tantrum, it loses trust.
Balancing AI (tailored advice) with human-centric UI/UX is critical—users must feel understood, not simply given generic tips.
Small friction improvements (lock-screen widget, one-tap entry) can dramatically improve usability in real-world contexts.

Conclusion

The Tantrum AI project allowed me to deliver a high-impact frontend experience—tailored to a unique, emotionally charged user scenario (toddler tantrums). From UX design through to frontend implementation and real-world optimisation, I helped build a tool that supports parents in a calm, confident and grounded way. I’m excited to bring the same empathy-driven, tech-savvy approach to future projects.
