The project is an infill building sitting in between doctor’s consulting rooms and an associated small hospital. The brief was to design a light and airy space which forms a social heart of the practice.

The building principally serves the function of a waiting space for friends and family of patients undergoing procedures in the hospital. Currently, these people wait under a tent in the parking area. The new building is a light space which functions as a coffee shop and waiting area. The circulation and connections to the existing buildings have been carefully considered to allow staff, patients and family and friends of patients to orientate themselves between the hospital and the practice.

The new structure is conceived as a lightweight, airy structure that can be easily erected adjacent to the existing, more solid, historical buildings which accommodate the doctors’ rooms and hospital.
The structure has been designed to allow for a mezzanine level to be added at a future stage as the hospital and practice grow.
For this project, I was appointed as the design architect and was solely responsible for the design concept. I worked closely with the client to develop the brief and the design. The project has been handed over to an architect of record who took the project over at the tender stage.
