What causes hand pain?
Hand and wrist pain can be the result of a condition that has developed over time, such as carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis, or as the result of an injury from an accidental fall, such as a fracture or jam, or sports injury, such as a sprain. Your risk of developing hand or wrist pain increases with age, playing sports, or repetitive motions like typing.
The following musculoskeletal conditions may also cause hand pain:
● Osteoarthritis
● Rheumatoid arthritis
● Carpal tunnel syndrome
● Fractures
● Ganglion cyst
● Sprains
● Strains
● Ligament injuries
● Tendon issues
● Trigger finger

What are the symptoms of hand pain?
Hand pain is a feeling of discomfort in your hand, wrist, or fingers. The hand consists of numerous bones, muscles, ligaments, and sheaths. Pain might result from an injury, disease, or degeneration over time. Hand pain might be mild or severe, short-lived, or long-lasting. It can present as dull, aching pain, sharp pain, numbness, burning, or tingling. You may experience redness, swelling, stiffness, and reduced range of motion in the joints of your hand or wrist.
If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms of hand and wrist pain, it may be time to seek medical treatment from a hand and wrist doctor before your symptoms worsen.
Other symptoms can include:
● Increased joint or thumb pain
● Finger joint pain when carrying, gripping, grasping, or twisting objects
● Swelling and discomfort in the hand or around the affected joint
● A sensation of grating or grinding in the affected joint - this is caused by damaged cartilage
● Swelling or significant bruising in the wrist, around the joint, or over the forearm.
● Changes in the surrounding joints - if you are experiencing thumb joint pain, your neighboring finger joints may become more mobile than normal
● Your hand, palm, and fingers may feel warm or appear red in color
● Hand numbness, tingling, or throbbing while resting or sleeping
● Developing cysts on the end joints of your fingers - this is caused by conditions such as arthritis
● Difficulty straightening your wrist

How is hand pain diagnosed?
To diagnose the root cause of hand pain, your orthopaedic specialist will ask about your medical history and symptoms, then they will examine your hand, fingers, and wrist. They may complete blood tests, X-rays, MRIs, or other imaging tests to determine the type and severity of your condition and develop a treatment plan.

How is hand pain treated?
Western Orthopaedics, P.C., offers the following treatments for hand pain relief:
● Home care
Sometimes, simple at-home solutions can reduce hand pain, stimulate healing, diminish inflammation, and prevent re-injury. Examples include ice, heat, braces, and splints.
Medication
Anti-inflammatory medication helps reduce inflammation and pain while a hand injury heals. Some medications alleviate pain associated with arthritis or delay disease progression.
Injections
Steroid, hyaluronic acid, and pain-relieving injections, as well as regenerative medicine, can alleviate hand pain and optimize healing. Western Orthopaedics, P.C., offers platelet-rich plasma and stem cell injections to stimulate cell regeneration and healing naturally.
Physical therapy
Physical therapy exercises with a specialist can strengthen tissues in your hand, increase joint range of motion, stimulate healing, and help prevent re-injury.
● Fracture care
Your orthopaedics specialist can treat hand fractures using casts, braces, traction, external fixation, or surgery in severe cases.
● Surgery
In some cases, and if not detected early, conditions such as carpal tunnel, pressure caused by repetitive motions on the median nerve, may create severe pain in the fingers, thumb, hand, wrist, and forearm, making surgery a possible treatment option to relieving your hand and wrist pain. If you have a cyst, other mass, or a severe hand injury that doesn’t heal with conservative methods, your provider might also recommend surgery. The Western Orthopaedics, P.C., providers specialize in arthroscopic/minimally invasive surgical procedures.
