The Metamorphosis: Editorial Redesign and Illustration
An editorial redesign of Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, pairing a new typographic system with abstract cover and interior illustrations. I used abstract illustration and colour systems to bring the story’s psychological tension into the reading experience.
A conceptual editorial redesign of Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. I created an abstract visual language for the cover and interior illustrations, then rebuilt the book’s layouts to reflect the story’s shifting tension and unease.
Gregor basks in the early morning light from his window before he realises anything is amiss
The door is slammed on Gregor's body causing bleeding and isolation
Gregor's belongings are slowly removed from his room
An apple is thrown at Gregor
Gregor listens to the sounds of his family through the door in isolation
Gregor's sister plays the violin
Gregor dies alone in his room
This project was an interesting practice in creating and executing abstract concepts. The idea was to create a form of cognitive dissonance between the illustrations and the text, creating visually appealing and harmonic abstract imagery side by side with the grim and desolate prose of the story.
