The Bali International Film Festival (Balinale), held annually, offers me the opportunity to conceptualize the festival for Balinale 2024. This year, Balinale aims to make Sanur the home of the festival. Sanur is renowned for its stunning sunrise, long coastline, and traditional Balinese canoe known as jukung. In the visual concept, the keyword is "Sailing across the world of cinema with Balinale." Hence, I designed the sail of the jukung to resemble film strips and incorporated the golden metallic Balinese script "᭑᭗," signifying seventeen (17th edition of Balinale)

The colors and shapes in the visual component are inspired by the spectrum of colors seen during sunrise, reflecting the clash between warm and cold tones as the night transitions into day. The graphic shapes draw inspiration from the main components of the jukung.

he most challenging aspect of creating the concept was figuring out how to make the sail the main visual element while depicting the sunrise. Naturally, the jukung and its sail would be backlit or appear only as a silhouette. To address this challenge, I applied a translucent red material so that light could still pass through the sail, creating a strong lighting effect.
