Living in a small home can make you feel confined to one space. However, this does not have to be the case for your home. There are several ways to make a smaller space look and feel bigger.
1. Use Lighter Shades
It is easy to make your space feel open and airy when you choose lighter hues of your favorite colors. You may want to paint the walls light blue or mint green, or maybe you want to stick with warm neutrals such as beige or ivory. Save the darker shades for accent colors.
2. Create Ample Lighting
When you pair lighter shades with ample lighting, your space is sure to feel bigger. Use task and ambient lighting to brighten up the room as needed. Of course, there is no substitute for filling your space with natural light, so be sure to open the curtains during the day.
3. Reflect The Light
Mirrors can make a space feel bigger by reflecting lighting around the room. You can even add a few metallic accents to your space, such as photo frames or wall art. Additionally, the reflection of the room itself can also trick the eye into seeing more space.
4. Downsize Your Furniture
You may need to take a more physical approach by downsizing your furniture. For example, you can remove the chaise lounge or small table that goes unused 90 percent of the time. Another idea is to use scaled-down furniture to create more space.
5. Keep Looking Up
One of the oldest tricks in the book is to draw the eye upward with crown molding, curtains, or artwork. A taller bookcase is another option for this trick. The idea is to make the ceiling feel taller by adding more height to the room.
A small home doesn't have to feel cramped or enclosed. When you think outside the box, you can easily make any space feel open, airy, and bigger.
