Organic Growth – With Zero Link Building
When I started the position, I completed a site audit. Despite having some traffic to dedicated pages, which mainly were statistical pages with no content, this site did not have a blog.
As a new employee, I wanted to impress early, so I looked for any page at the bottom of the first page of Google with some traffic. One of the most overlooked early wins in starting a new project is not creating something new but boosting a page (or pages) to the bottom of the first page of Google or page 2. While the developer I was working with was trying to integrate a blog on the site (WordPress didn’t work with their current setup), I created a list of tasks to improve on-page SEO for several existing pages.

On Page SEO

Title Tags: I re-wrote dozens of pages to better optimize for keywords and reduce confusion for Google.
Meta Descriptions: Working with the developer, we optimized the meta descriptions in a way that would update automatically based on the time format and details of the page. This page had sports player profiles, so to stay up to date, we created a template that would use key specifics about the player and team. >> Example: Player Name is plays {postion} for the {sports team name}. The following page shows {league} statistics for the {year} season. 2. Header Tags (H1, H2, H3, etc.)—There is a hierarchy to how Header Tags need to be handled, which many sites don’t focus on. Most companies think the difference between an H2 and an H2 is the font size, but they are far more important in SEO. When a page is crawled, it views each Header tag in terms of importance. There should only be one H1 and one H2.
URL Structure- mapped out a straightforward but descriptive and keyword-rich URL strategy that we used for years to come. 4. Content Optimization—Keyword Placement: Incorporate keywords naturally in the first 100 words, headers, and throughout the content. Content length: Aim for in-depth, valuable content (often 800+ words for competitive topics). Keyword Density: Avoid overstuffing; aim for natural usage. 5. Additional SEO Tasks: Speed optimization, Schema, added Breadcrumbs, structured data for rich results Content Campaign SEO content campaign begins with thorough research to align business objectives with search intent. The first step involves identifying target keywords that strike a balance between search volume and competition. My favorite tool to do this, is actually KW Finder by Mangools. (example image Below)
The content creation process involves crafting high-quality, informative, and engaging material. Writers incorporate target keywords naturally into the title, headers, and body text, ensuring the content answers user questions comprehensively. Internal links are critical here, so I trained every writer to include three inner links to relevant pages.
I handled all of the images; I don’t believe in just posting random photos. I like high-quality images, preferably a close-up action shot or photo of the person/subject.
Once published, the content is promoted through social media, email campaigns, or collaborations with influencers to generate initial traffic.
Backlink outreach is usually the next step here, but we had a limited budget. So, we focused a ton of content instead.
Performance is continuously monitored using tools like Google Analytics and Search Console. Key metrics such as organic traffic, keyword rankings, bounce, and conversion rates are analyzed to assess the campaign’s effectiveness. Based on insights, adjustments are made to the content or surrounding strategy to improve results.
An SEO content campaign is rarely a one-off effort. It involves regular updates to ensure relevance as search algorithms evolve and user behavior shifts. The process, though time-intensive, delivers long-term benefits by building authority, improving visibility, and driving sustained organic traffic growth to the website.
