Making US Taxes Informative and Fun for Americans Abroad

Regardless of whether an American citizen lives within the United States or abroad, they still need to file taxes if they reach the filing threshold.

From 2018-2021 I was the expat tax writer for MyExpatTaxes - the leading, most affordable US tax software in the world. My purpose as their writer was to inform US citizens overseas about their tax duty through making ''fun'' and ''taxes'' come together.

For tax season 2020 (in the year 2021), I developed a guide to help expats prepare and file their worldwide income with the IRS. Here is a sneak peek of that:

Writing & Collaboration Process

Before starting the guide, I used SEO program SEMRUSH and found the keywords that would work best for the business.

Next, I developed a structure of the post by listing out the important facts about what an American abroad needs to know for filing taxes in 2021. Once I gathered all 21 points for my list, I started the writing process.

I began to combine my knowledge of expat taxes and sources from highly established websites like the IRS website. From doing so, I wrote a 1500+ word blog for the company.

As a final check, I added in the necessary links, Stock photos, and embedded videos to visually support the blog. Lastly, I use tools like Grammarly and Yoast (see more below) to for grammar and SEO checks, and submitted my final draft to the CEO - an IRS Enrolled Agent.
