Averleigh: Private Golf Club Website

The brief

Averleigh is a private members' golf club in the High Weald of East Sussex, founded in 1897 and laid out across the park of a Georgian house. It needed a website for a membership of 340 that shows the course properly, takes visiting golf by arrangement and treats joining as an introduction rather than an application form.

The challenge

Club websites tend to look like old brochures, with crests, tracked capitals and a members' login. Averleigh had to feel current and calm, give a visitor the days and rates at once, show the eighteen holes without a gallery of stock fairways, and keep joining private.

The approach

We built the site around the estate itself. A full-bleed photograph of the House opens the homepage, an estate-plan viewer opens each hole with its yardage, visiting and membership run as short enquiries to the Secretary's office, and the House, the Golf Studio and contact each get a page of their own.

Design system

A light stone page carries General Sans set large and tight, with an ink black and a single gold mark used sparingly. Rules are hairlines, corners are square, there are no shadows or pills, and headlines resolve word by word out of a blur so the photography stays the subject.

Built with Astro

Averleigh is a static Astro site written with plain TypeScript, so pages arrive fast on a phone. The visiting, membership, lesson and contact forms are built into the pages, every panel and menu animates both ways, and motion respects reduced-motion settings.

Eighteen holes on an estate plan

The Course page lays the park out as a plan. Choose a hole and the viewer opens its par, yardage and name, from the Cedars at the first to the House at the eighteenth, so a golfer can walk the round before arriving.

Visiting golf, by arrangement

Visitors with a handicap are welcome on set days by arrangement with the Secretary's office. The page shows the days, the rates and a request form that asks for the time wanted, then replies within a working day.

Membership by introduction

There is no application form. New members are proposed by a member and seconded, and the page walks through the four stages, proposed, received, lunch and elected, so a prospective member knows what happens before they ask.

The House

The House page covers lunch in the Long Room every day, dinner on Friday and Saturday and the library, set out as short menus beside photographs of the Georgian rooms, so members and guests know what to expect before they arrive.

The Golf Studio

The Golf Studio introduces the head professional and the assistant professional, who teach on the practice ground and in the oak barn beside the first tee, with a lesson request built into the page.

The outcome

Members, visitors and proposers each find their route within a screen: the course and its eighteen holes, the days and rates for visiting golf, how an introduction works and where to lunch. Every enquiry goes to the Secretary's office, and the site stays quiet and fast on a phone.
