JOS Web Platform Design (🚧WIP🚧)

Bekwa Undie UI/UX designer

JOS (The Joshua Olaiya Show) is a vibrant platform uniting education, inspiration, and innovation across robotics, AI, aerospace, and tech. Anchored by its podcast, JOS shares insights from global thought leaders while driving projects that empower innovators and reshape Africa’s tech future.
The aim of this project was to create a centralized digital platform to effectively communicate JOS's mission, vision, and the value of its subsidiaries, with a strong emphasis on showcasing and promoting the podcast as a key feature.

The Challenge:

JOS, with its diverse offerings, needed a centralized digital platform to effectively communicate its mission, vision, and the value of its subsidiaries. A significant part of this challenge was to highlight the JOS Podcast as a primary source of valuable content and to make it easily accessible to a wide audience. The website needed to:
Prominently feature the JOS Podcast and its episodes.
Clearly present the educational content of JOS Podcast.
Showcase the practical innovation of JOS DIY.
Promote the branding and advertising services of JOS Ads.
Lay the groundwork for the future JOS Academy.
Facilitate community engagement and fundraising, with the podcast playing a key role in driving engagement.

The Solution:

The design process began with a deep dive into JOS's mission, goals, and target audience. This involved:
Analyzing JOS's existing content across various platforms (social media, podcast platforms). This process involved a detailed audit of JOS's content on platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube. The aim was to understand the content formats, topics, and audience engagement levels on each platform. Special attention was given to the podcast's performance, including listenership, episode popularity, and audience feedback. This analysis helped to identify the most effective content strategies and how they could be integrated into the new website, with the podcast taking center stage.
Understanding the needs of the JOS community (learners, engineers, entrepreneurs). This involved conducting surveys and interviews with members of JOS's audience to gather insights into their needs, preferences, and pain points. The research focused on understanding what kind of educational resources they were looking for, what challenges they faced in their learning or professional journeys, and how JOS could better support them. The podcast's role in addressing these needs was a key consideration.
Identifying key user journeys for each subsidiary and core function (e.g., listening to a podcast, submitting a DIY project, sponsoring a podcast). This involved mapping out the steps a user would take to complete specific tasks on the website, such as listening to a podcast episode, submitting a DIY project, or contacting JOS for sponsorship opportunities.

Thought Process:

The key findings from the research phase directly informed the website's design. The need for a centralized platform, the desire for structured educational content and hands-on learning, and the identified user journey friction points shaped the following design priorities:
Centralized Platform: The website was designed to consolidate all of JOS's resources and offerings into a single, easily accessible location. This addresses the issue of fragmented content and provides users with a seamless experience.
Concise Navigation and Information Architecture: Based on the user journey mapping, the website's navigation and information architecture were structured to ensure that users can easily find the content they need. This includes clear menus, search functionality, and intuitive page layouts.
Enhanced Content Presentation: To meet the community's desire for structured educational content, the JOS Podcast section was designed to present episodes in a clear, organized, and easily searchable manner. Similarly, the JOS DIY section was designed to make it easy for users to find and submit hands-on projects.
Clear Calls to Action: To address the friction points in user journeys, clear calls to action were implemented throughout the website. This makes it easy for users to perform key tasks, such as contacting JOS for sponsorship opportunities or making donations.

My Approach:

I designed a website with the following key features and sections:
Home Page:
The Home Page showcases recent podcast episodes and featured DIY projects, provides clear pathways to each subsidiary, and integrates calls to action for community engagement and sponsorship. Specifically, the Home Page is designed to be the central hub, providing users with an immediate overview of what JOS offers.
Podcast Library:
A dedicated section for browsing and listening to JOS Podcast episodes, with categories, timestamps, and robust search functionality. This section is more than just a list of episodes; it's a curated experience designed to make discovering and enjoying the JOS Podcast as easy and engaging as possible.
Digital Store:
A dedicated section for selling e-books, courses, and hardware kits related to the podcast content, enhancing the learning experience. This section is designed to provide valuable resources that complement and expand upon the topics covered in the JOS Podcast.
Dashboard:
A comprehensive administrative dashboard was designed to provide JOS with powerful tools for managing the website's content, users, and overall operations.
Community & Membership Portal:
A portal for paid community members, providing access to exclusive content, discussions, and networking opportunities. Clear information on membership options and benefits. This section is designed to foster a sense of belonging and provide additional value to dedicated JOS community members. The portal aims to create a vibrant online space where members can connect, collaborate, and further their knowledge in the fields of robotics, AI, aerospace, and technology.
Sponsor a Podcast:
A page outlining the benefits of sponsoring JOS Podcast and providing a clear process for sponsorship applications. This section of the website is dedicated to attracting potential sponsors for the JOS Podcast. This section is designed to clearly communicate the value proposition of sponsoring the podcast, which likely includes reaching a highly engaged audience of tech enthusiasts, gaining brand visibility, and supporting valuable educational content. The page also provides a streamlined process for interested sponsors to submit their applications, ensuring a smooth and efficient experience for both JOS and its sponsors.
Crowdfunding & Fundraising:
A section for raising funds to support JOS initiatives, with information on how to donate and track campaign progress. This section highlights the various ways in which users can contribute to JOS's mission and the impact of their contributions. It aims to create transparency and build trust with potential donors, encouraging them to support JOS's work in driving technological advancement in Africa.
About Us:
A page detailing JOS's mission, vision, values, and team. This page is crucial for establishing the identity and credibility of JOS. It provides visitors with insights into the organization's core principles, long-term goals, and the people behind the platform. By articulating the mission, vision, and values, JOS can connect with its audience on a deeper level, fostering trust and encouraging engagement. The team section adds a personal touch, showcasing the expertise and passion of the individuals driving JOS forward.

The Impact:

The website is poised to make a significant impact across various spheres:
For JOS as a Company:
Expansion in reach and brand influence, solidifying JOS's leadership in African tech education.
Growth in website traffic and user engagement, enhancing platform sustainability.
Increased attraction of sponsors and partners, driving long-term organizational success.
For Africa:
Increase in youth engagement in tech education and initiatives through accessible resources.
Growth in locally developed tech solutions is showcased on the platform.
Increased visibility for African tech talent and solutions, fostering a new generation of tech leaders.
For Businesses:

Growth in sponsor engagement and investment in African tech ventures.
Enhanced brand visibility and stronger connections between businesses and the African tech market.
For the World at Large:
Increased awareness of African tech innovation, potentially leading to a rise in global collaborations.
Increase in the diversity of the global tech community through inclusive initiatives.
Contribution to a more inclusive and globally relevant tech landscape.
The website serves as a foundation for JOS to expand its reach, empower innovators, and drive technological advancement in Africa and beyond. By providing a centralized hub for education, inspiration, and collaboration, the website enables JOS to connect with a wider audience, amplify its impact, and accelerate the pace of technological innovation across the continent.
