The Brief

Ben Madden, founder of Digital Sparks, needed to vet a production partner through a single trial day before committing to a full ongoing engagement. The brief was deliberately open — raw footage the night before, one standard working shift, no output target. The real challenge was not volume. It was earning trust across five distinct formats with no pre-built infrastructure and no second attempt.

Creative Decisions

Format Selection: Twenty-five source projects were available. Five formats were chosen — Advisory, Blind Ranking, This or That, and Quick Fire — not to maximise count, but to demonstrate range across structurally distinct content types. Each required a different pacing instinct, caption logic, and motion approach.
Reference Departure: Ben Madden supplied reference videos. Those were treated as a brief minimum, not a target. Every deliverable was built to a higher standard — sharper caption timing, stronger motion hierarchy, cleaner sound design. The goal was not to match Digital Sparks' existing work, but to show what it could become.
Caption & Motion System: Each format received a distinct caption and motion treatment built from scratch within the session. Advisory: restrained, word-emphasis driven. Blind Ranking: bold, numbered. This or That: location callout cards. Quick Fire: punchy and reactive. No shared templates. Every system was written to the format's tone requirement.
Colour & Grade: Grading decisions were format-specific: cool-tone for Advisory Indoor, naturalistic for On Location, controlled outdoors for Blind Ranking and This or That, high-contrast for Quick Fire. The consistent logic across all: grade should support the format's social function, not override the subject.
Delivery Architecture: All nine sequences were organised into a single Premiere Pro project with colour-coded bins, corrected audio tracks, and consistent output settings. The structure was built to hand off — labelled, exportable, and legible to any editor picking it up after. Handoff-readiness was the standard, not a bonus.

Outcome

Following the trial, the engagement expanded beyond post-production. A job description was written, assessment tasks designed, and four editors — two senior, two junior — were hired and onboarded through a process built in-house. The Digital Sparks production team has been fully operational since 1 March 2026.
