Overview

Key stakeholders at FTM had built a powerful software tool to manage freight shipments, but client feedback necessitated a new approach to the platform’s design. The purpose of this project was to design a new solution for a cloud-based freight management software. The goal of the project was to improve the user experience and address design limitations of the previous website-based access. The project team was responsible for conducting research, developing user personas, creating wireframes and prototypes, and testing the application

Role & Responsibilities

As the lead UX designer on this project, my role was to conduct research, design user flows, create wireframes and high-fidelity prototypes, and conduct user testing to ensure the success of the product. I worked closely with the development team to ensure that the final product was delivered on time and met the expectations of the stakeholders.

Project Duration

6 Months

What tools & methods did you use?

For this project, I used various tools and methods including Figma for design and prototyping, Google Analytics for data analysis, and user testing through usability testing tools such as Maze and UserTesting.com. I also used various research methods such as surveys, interviews, and user testing to gather insights and feedback from users.

Value of the project

The cloud-based freight management application created a more seamless user experience for customers by providing a user-friendly interface for managing freight, which was not available with the previous website. The new application enabled each page to be customised according to the design style guide, which was not an option with the restricted website template. Each feature is implemented with accessibility and ease of use in mind.

Target Audience / main user

The main target audience for the application was shipping companies and their customers. The application was designed to help these users manage their freight more effectively and efficiently.

Primary Persona

Michael is a small business owner who needed to manage their freight shipments in an efficient manner. His core responsibility is to operate efficiently, which is largely determined by how much manual task is on his plate for the day.
Goal:
Reduce the amount of time spent on manual tasks
Reduce the rate of errors made with every task
Behaviour:
Identifying goods being transported and ensure proper procedures are followed when sending and receiving goods
Intuitively designed system that clearly defines every step of his process and acts as a holistic platform where all tasks can be completed
Pains:
Using clunky platform with readability issues that make it hard to navigate
Having difficulty training staff on his existing platform

Scopes and Constraints

The main constraint for the project was time. I was acting mostly alone as the designer on this project and had the assistance of a couple back end team members. Most of our energy was committed to testing out the designs to ensure they function properly.

Design Process

The design process for this project involved several stages including research, user flow design, wireframing, high-fidelity prototyping, and user testing. We started with research to gain insights into the needs of the target audience and then used this information to guide the design process. We created user flows and wireframes to help visualize the application and then created high-fidelity prototypes for user testing.

Insights from research / interviews / mapping:

Through research and user testing, we gained several insights into the needs of the target audience. For example, users wanted a more streamlined and efficient process for managing their freight, as well as real-time updates on the status of their shipments. Users also wanted the application to be easily accessible on multiple devices.

Outcomes & Results:

The final product was well-received by users and stakeholders, with positive feedback on the new user-friendly interface and improved functionality. The new application provided a more seamless and efficient experience for managing freight, and provided real-time updates on the status of shipments. The application also helped to streamline the entire process of managing freight, from ordering to shipping, resulting in a more efficient experience for users.
