RAKYA is a conceptual craft beer brand based in Costa Rica. The packaging for this Tropical Hazy IPA was designed to capture the exhilarating energy of a night surf session, blending tropical vibes with a rebellious, skeletal twist.
My primary task was to conceive and execute a complete brand identity and packaging design for RAKYA, a conceptual Tropical Hazy IPA. The craft beer market is incredibly saturated, and the central challenge was to create a design that would not only be impossible to ignore on a crowded shelf but would also forge a genuine connection with an audience that craves authenticity and energy over tradition. The brief called for a radical departure from the typical minimalist or rustic aesthetics, demanding a visual language that was as bold, vibrant, and unconventional as the flavor profile of the beer itself. The goal was to build a brand from the ground up that felt alive, telling a compelling story that could extend far beyond the can.
To answer this challenge, the strategy was to anchor the brand in a powerful narrative. Instead of relying on abstract patterns or simple logos, I developed a central character to personify the RAKYA experience. This led to the creation of our skeletal protagonist—an icon of the eternal vibe. This character deliberately subverts the cliché of a grim skeleton, reimagining him as the life of the party, eternally surfing a massive wave of tropical flavor with a drink in hand. He represents a life lived so fully that the good times never have to end, embodying the brand's core ethos of seizing the moment with unapologetic joy. This storytelling approach gives the brand a memorable personality and a unique voice in a sea of competitors.
The visual execution was a direct translation of this high-energy concept. The illustration style is intentionally graphic and dynamic, filled with a sense of fluid motion that captures the feeling of both surfing and a psychedelic party. The color palette was a critical choice, designed to be a sensory explosion of electric purples, vibrant pinks, and deep oceanic blues. This high-voltage combination evokes the surreal spectacle of a tropical sunset crashing into the neon glow of a midnight beach gathering. The "RAKYA" logotype itself was custom-drawn with a drippy, flowing quality, ensuring it felt seamlessly integrated with the artwork and reinforced the juicy, energetic nature of the brand.
The final result is a holistic brand experience where every element works in concert to tell a cohesive story. The packaging is not just a container for a product; it’s a portal into the world of RAKYA. It’s an invitation to a paradise that’s a little less serene and a lot more wild. The design serves as a powerful and flexible foundation, creating a brand that is instantly recognizable and ripe with potential for merchandise, advertising, and social media content. Ultimately, the RAKYA project was an exercise in building a brand with a loud, confident, and utterly unforgettable identity.
