We all strive for success, often pushing ourselves to the limit in pursuit of perfection.
I used to be caught in this trap, believing that achieving my goals meant achieving perfection.
But let me share my personal journey of discovery, where I learned that true progress lies in balance and consistency rather than pushing myself too hard with goals that were just too unrealistic and tough to reach.
Stuck in perfection
After setting goals for myself, I believed that perfection was the only path forward. If I aimed to be healthy, I committed to intense daily workouts and a strict diet. The outcome? Exhaustion, soreness, and a complete lack of energy after just one week. Whenever I didn’t stick to this strict plan, it felt like I messed up, leading me to label myself as lacking self-control.
The pursuit of top grades was no different. I thought I had to complete every assignment flawlessly, score the highest marks, and seize every opportunity for validation from teachers. Similarly, when I tried to get into the habit of reading, I aimed for a huge goal of reading for two hours every day. But, as you might expect, I couldn’t keep up with such tough routines. And every time I couldn’t do it, I felt like I was failing, which made me doubt myself even more.
The discovery of consistency and balance
Tired of feeling defeated, I committed myself to a journey of self-discovery and change. I stumbled upon the concepts of consistency and balance, which initially seemed unimpressive compared to my prior “all or nothing” mindset.
By not setting unrealistic expectations for myself, I began dedicating just 5 to 15 minutes a day to building habits. Surprisingly, this approach transformed my life. Not only did I manage to maintain consistency, but I also found joy in the process without burning out.
Letting go of the “all or nothing” mindset
Letting go of those tough rules I set for myself felt amazing. I found out that I don’t have to stick to a difficult, forced plan to make progress. Rather than working out seven days a week and eating only greens, I found a middle ground. I committed to two workouts a week and made healthier food choices, while still enjoying sweets once in a while. This compromise allowed me to sustain my efforts and make steady progress.
Small and slow steps lead to huge results
By starting with just five minutes of daily reading, I gradually built up my routine. Each week, I added a few minutes, allowing me to reach 40 minutes without feeling like I was forcing myself. You can apply this principle to absolutely anything in life. Small, consistent steps compound over time, leading to significant results.
Slow progress > perfection
My experience showed me that I don’t need to give up on progress just to chase perfection. Striving for balance and consistency is the key to sustainable growth. Embracing this approach, I found joy in my pursuits and achieved real results without the heavy burden of unrealistic expectations.
So, remember:
Embrace imperfection: Allow yourself to make progress without the pressure of perfection.
Consistency is key: Dedicate a small amount of time regularly to your goals for steady advancement.
Find your balance: Seek a middle ground that allows you to enjoy the journey without burning out.
Celebrate small wins: Every step forward, no matter how small, contributes to your overall success.
Don’t let the pursuit of perfection hold you back. Embrace consistency and balance, and watch as your efforts compound into remarkable accomplishments.
