Океан оказался удивительнее представлений Мекки.Тело его раздулось от перепада давления. И, если бы не близкая поверхность и встреча с долгожданными чужаками, то он бы пришел в ярость от поведения своего организма.Одно движение и он, разорвав границу между привычным и непривычным, всплыл, забарахтался на волнах бесцветным пузырем. Все шесть глаз, лишенных воды, сразу расфокусировались, и мир вне океана ненадолго предстал Мекки в виде мутного, белесого полотна.Чужаков было двое. Они стояли на странном острове, который выглядел так же твердо, как дно, но был светлее и дикой незнакомой формы.Мекки начал контакт. Высунувшись из воды, он стал передавать сигналы приветствия. Шевелил педипальцами, выставляя их в форме дружелюбности и добродушия.Наконец, пришельцы заметили его. Стали махать конечностями. Какими-то мерзко-бугристыми и толстыми, как у донного многонога.Мекки замер, пытаясь распознать в этих движениях знакомые слова. Даже в космосе.— Помню, — Нут, поковырял своей палочкой в зубах. — Ваш анализатор сканирует пространство и выискивает подходящие для еды организмы.— Не так! — Томас от возмущения даже приподнялся. — Он выискивает самые вкусные организмы! Ищет комбинации с известными компонентами и дает рекомендации по приготовлению самой вкусной еды. А, когда мы закончим разработку прототипа и выпустим анализатор на рынок, он будет хранить единую базу всего, что смогли найти туристы со всей галактики, и дарить непередаваемые вкусовые эмоции. Дальше совместим анализатор с пищевой машиной. Гастрономический экстаз! Горы денег!— Согласен профинансировать прототип, — Нут смотрел на море. — Было вкусно. И перспективы неплохие.Томас улыбнулся.На дне океана, так и не дождавшись возвращения Мекки, собрание решало вопрос о направлении на поверхность новых контактеров.

Mekki surfaced.

He propelled himself with motor-like tentacles, compressed and expanded his watery body, and even aided himself with a huge soft beak. The surroundings gradually became warmer and brighter. The ocean was more wondrous than Mekki had ever imagined.

His body swelled due to the pressure difference. Had it not been for the nearing surface and the anticipated encounter with the aliens, he would've been enraged by his body's reaction.

With one movement, he broke the boundary between the familiar and unfamiliar, surfaced, and floundered on the waves like a colorless bubble. All six of his eyes, deprived of water, immediately lost focus, and the world outside the ocean appeared to Mekki as a blurry, whitish canvas.

There were two aliens. They stood on a strange island that seemed as solid as the sea floor but was brighter and of an oddly unfamiliar shape.

Mekki initiated contact. Poking out of the water, he began to transmit greeting signals. He moved his pedipalps, positioning them in a gesture of friendliness and amiability.

Finally, the aliens noticed him. They waved their limbs — bizarrely lumpy and thick, like those of a bottom-dwelling millipede.

Mekki froze, trying to decipher any familiar words in their movements. He was even saddened by not understanding the aliens' language when one of them took out an object, as oddly straight-shaped as the island, and pointed it at Mekki.

Darkness ensued. Not the kind of darkness peppered with cozy dim flashes and the gentle touch of kin, but complete, dead, and irreversible darkness.

"How's that?" Thomas wiped grease from his chin.

"Good," Nut mumbled with a mouth full of food.

"It's going to be a hit," Thomas tossed an empty stick, which had recently grilled meat on it, into the water towards the boat and lay down on the sand. "Imagine the money we'll make. Our names will be on every menu in every restaurant in the galaxy. Our food analyzer will change tastes. We'll change its name, of course. Any ideas?"

Nut shook his head.

"We'll transform boring planetary journeys into a gourmet experience. Delicious food anytime, anywhere. Even in space."

"I remember," Nut, picking his teeth with a stick, said. "Your analyzer scans the space and identifies organisms suitable for food."

"Not quite!" Thomas, visibly irritated, corrected. "It identifies the tastiest organisms! It searches for combinations with known components and gives recommendations for preparing the most delicious meals. And, once we finalize the prototype and release the analyzer on the market, it'll have a database of everything tourists from across the galaxy have found, offering unparalleled taste experiences. Then we'll integrate the analyzer with a food machine. Gastronomic ecstasy! Mountains of money!"

"I agree to finance the prototype," Nut looked at the sea. "It was tasty. And the prospects are good."

Thomas smiled.

At the bottom of the ocean, awaiting Mekki's return, a meeting decided on sending new contactees to the surface.
