Mindful MD: A Physician Wellness + Influence Day

Christina Vanvuren

Bringing healing to medicine

With a physician a day in the United States committing suicide, physician burnout is an epidemic. Lightning Bolt Solutions spearheaded The Pathology of Burnout, a research initiative to better understand why physician burnout happens and what can be done about it. As part of the project, we were tasked with creating an intimate event for leading Bay Area physicians that would help spark a new narrative in medicine — one where talking about burnout is not just accepted but encouraged.
The event we created included physicians from prestigious schools, award-winning hospitals, non-profit organizations, and digital health companies that are making immense progress in advancing healthcare. But, unlike most healthcare events, Mindful MD: A Physician Wellness + Influence Day invited guests to step away from their hospitals, clinics, titles, and specialties and into a space where vulnerability was not just welcomed but encouraged. The results were phenomenal, with many attendees opening up about their own struggles with burnout, physician family members lost to suicide, and their hopes for more healing in medicine. The event went so well that we were asked to plan a larger conference for fall 2020.
Mindful MD succeeded in authentically raising the profile and power of the Lighting Bolt brand:
Instagram reach: 996,000
Twitter reach: 526,000
24 physician attendees
7 speakers/workshop leaders
Enriching experience for the LB team
~ 4 hours of recorded audio content
Library of marketing-ready photos
30+ organizations represented
25 sponsors contributing over $57,000 worth of in-kind donations

The event was AMAZING. You and the team did such an incredible job. The speakers were awesome and weaving the activities and self-care into the day made the whole day magical. Thanks for including me! — Ann Garnier, Lisa Health

Participating in this event was a privilege and inspiration. A credit to Suvas & Emily, and all of you, for making such an incredible effort. You have launched a vital service for the next generation of clinicians. — Dr. Stephen Xenakis, Brigadier General (Ret), U.S. Army
