Samuel Owonte is a cartoonist and animator based in Vancouver, Canada.
In Q3 last year, a mutual friend of ours reached out to us (Isaac and I) to help create a web experience for his friend (who is an amazing cartoonist). I was occupied so I didn't really couldn't handle art direction this time around, but Isaac did an awesome job.
✅ Goals:
To build a Web experience that will:
🏷 Translate Toe's work into a meaningful digital experience.
🏷 Highlight the different categories of his craft in the most visually exciting way possible.
🏷 Show off a gallery of his work (images and videos).
🏷 Display his films in a cinematic way.
🧱Challenge:
👨🏽💻 Handling various media across pages in the most performant way possible.
💪🏼 Solution:
Used Vimeo for large videos, Cloudinary + intersection observer for image optimization, and built an immersive preloader.

Code - JS, SCSS, Pug
📚 Takeaways/Thing I learned:
Image prefetching for better user experience.
Working with and animating SVGs and canvas elements.
Touch-based interactions.
