The Challenge

The tool of interest is used by two parties: medical lab techs and lab managers. Lab techs review patient samples to be either accepted or rejected, while managers need to understand the efficiency of their lab overall and identify critical issues as they arise.

Process

I started with an important foundational discovery phase to thoroughly understand the tool as it existed. An expert review was conducted to understand usability issues associated with Data Innovations' current product and a prototype they created in an initial design sprint.
Following the research phase, I identified potential front-end frameworks for Data Innovations to later implement the future design. Initial wireframes were designed to address the problems discovered and create a more organized, centralized approach to data organization through the use of a dashboard.
Usability testing was conducted on an interactive prototype and allowed us to identify user pain points and validate the design direction. Participants explored the dashboard concept, organization of information, navigation, and layout by going through common workflows using the new design. Findings from the research informed a final round of changes to improve the initial wireframes.

The Final Design

The final design was a flexible dashboard that allowed lab techs and managers alike to organize large amounts of data and with opportunities for customization based on user type. The final deliverable included rendered wireframes along with a guidelines document that allowed the Data Innovations team to move forward with implementing the proposed design.
