Top 4 Copywriting Tips I’ve Learned As A Beginner

If you’re like me, I had no idea what copywriting was before someone sent me an article for The Barefoot Writers. And that’s where I jumped down the rabbit hole. I decided to purchase the course and that’s how I decided to start my copywriting career, but it wasn’t the only source I used to try and learn all that I could! (And I’m still learning!) But in all my research, there are a few things that stood out to me and here they are.
1 You don’t have to be an expert writer to be good at this job and make a living at it.
I have worked in the service industry for 14 years starting from the bottom and working my way up. So, it was safe to say that writing wasn’t high on my list of possible career choices. I knew that it was something I liked to do but the thought that I could sit down at my computer and type and make a living and provide for my child seemed too far-fetched to me. But while you don’t have to be an expert you do have to understand how to write copy. And copy in the nuts and bolts of it is writing persuasively to your (or your clients) target audience.
2 Write constantly.
Everywhere I’ve looked one of the main points I’ve seen come across is you need to be constantly writing. You’ve got to flex the muscle if you want to keep it strong. I have found that just googling writing prompts and picking the things that interest me and word vomiting on my computer has helped me get over the hurdle of “Oh crap how am I going to come up with something to say??” And trust me, some of them were terrible and they will forever stay hidden on my computer never to see the light of day they just helped me get over myself.
3 Look for copy in your everyday life.
It's everywhere. From the 100 emails you get a day from all your favorite stores to the oil change coupon for your local automotive shop, everyone gets in their mailbox. That’s copy. Look back at the ones that grabbed your attention and try and figure out what it is about them that caught your eye. Was it the sales? Was it the way they convinced you that you had to get this product now? Is it something that solved a problem you weren’t even aware of? All these things make for a persuasive copy that sells. And they’ve all gotten us more times than we can count.
4 Consistency is key.
This is not a get-rich-quick scheme! You can’t cut corners and just use ChatGPT or AI to write everything for you while you rack in the dough. (While I’m learning they can be used sparingly as a tool.) This is a real career that takes real work to be successful. You’re not going to wake up the day after you make your LinkedIn or finish your website and have an inbox full of clients fighting to give you all their money. You are going to have to put in the work and continually try to grow and learn with this business. But sticking with it will give you the freedom to choose what you want your career to look like. Whether it's part-time freelance, or full-time marketing or ad agencies or even being a full-time nomad who works from their computer anywhere in the world.
There are so many other tricks that I’m learning and will still learn but these are the few that have stuck out to me since I’ve started to learn all about the copywriting world.
