Making Catalunya's 2026 Budget Interactive

An interactive data experience created with Domestic Data Streamers for the Generalitat de Catalunya, turning a complex public budget into something people can explore, compare and understand.
I worked remotely from London with the Barcelona-based team to develop the interactive experience and translate the creative concept into a responsive digital product.

The challenge

Government budgets contain huge amounts of information, but spreadsheets, reports and large numbers don't make it particularly easy for people to understand where public money goes.
The challenge was to take Catalunya's 2026 budget and create an experience that made the information more approachable, visual and engaging without losing the complexity behind the data.
Rather than presenting another conventional dashboard, the project approached the budget as something people could actively explore.

Putting the budget on the table

The creative concept was inspired by a physical table.
Instead of navigating traditional charts and menus, users interact with a digital table containing different areas of public spending. They can explore themes, select areas and move through the information in a much more tactile way.
That physical metaphor became the foundation for the interface and gave the project its distinctive visual language.

Making complex data interactive

The experience allows users to move between different areas of the budget and discover how public money is distributed.
The challenge from a development perspective was to turn a large amount of structured information into interactions that felt immediate and intuitive.
Rather than treating data visualisation as a separate chart sitting alongside the content, the data became part of the interface itself.

Data visualisation and storytelling

Numbers are much easier to understand when they're given context.
Throughout the experience, data is presented visually to help users compare areas, understand proportions and explore the priorities behind the budget.
Animation and interaction reveal information progressively, helping avoid overwhelming the user with everything at once.

Interaction and motion

Motion was used to help communicate how the interface works and create continuity as users move between themes and levels of information.
Transitions, interactive states and animated elements provide feedback and make a potentially dense subject feel much more approachable.
The aim wasn't to add animation for decoration, but to use it to support navigation and understanding.

Building for different screens

An interface inspired by a physical table naturally works very differently on a large desktop screen and a mobile phone.
Part of the development challenge was adapting the concept across screen sizes while keeping the experience intuitive and retaining its visual character.
Layouts, interactions and navigation were adjusted for smaller screens rather than simply shrinking the desktop experience.

My role

I worked on the creative front-end development of the experience in collaboration with Domestic Data Streamers and the wider project team.
My role focused on translating the creative direction and interaction concepts into a responsive browser experience, including:
• Creative front-end development • Interactive data visualisation • Custom JavaScript interactions • Motion and transitions • Drag-and-drop interactions • Responsive behaviour • Data-driven interface components • Cross-device development and testing • Performance optimisation

The result

The finished experience transforms Catalunya's 2026 budget from a collection of figures into something people can actively explore.
For me, the project is a good example of where creative development, interaction design and data visualisation come together: taking a complex subject and finding a digital interaction that makes it more understandable and engaging.
