Bringing Clarity to a Growing Healthcare Storytelling Podcast Platform

Project Summary

The Nocturnists is a nonprofit storytelling platform that amplifies the voices of healthcare workers through live performances, podcast series, documentary storytelling, and educational programs.
As the organization grew organically, their website — originally built on Squarespace — became increasingly difficult to navigate. Content was dense, duplicated, and scattered across multiple sections, making it challenging for visitors to discover podcast episodes, participate in storytelling programs, or understand the organization’s broader mission.
lover studio partnered with The Nocturnists to restructure the website’s information architecture, migrate the platform to Framer, and design a more intuitive digital experience aligned with their refreshed brand.

Overview

What We Did

• Information Architecture • Migration of 18 Pages and over 200 Podcast Episodes • Integration of Donation Tools, Submission Forms, and Newsletter • Usability Testing • Framer / Platform Training

The Challenge

Content Density and Navigation Friction

The website had expanded from a single storytelling event into a multi-program platform. Over time, new pages and content were added without a clear structure, resulting in duplicated information and confusing navigation paths.
Key actions were often buried several clicks deep.

Evolving Podcast Network

The existing site lacked a scalable system for organizing content in a way that supported discovery and long-term growth.

Brand Alignment

Following a recent rebrand, the organization needed a website that could better reflect their visual identity while remaining intuitive for new audiences.

Information Architecture

We worked closely with the team to redesign the site structure around real user journeys and the organization's priorities.
This structure reduced duplication and created clearer entry points for both listeners and collaborators.

Our Solution

Scalable CMS for Podcast Discovery

We implemented a flexible CMS system allowing episodes to be organized by series, theme, and publication year. This made it easier for users to explore content and for staff to manage updates.

Dedicated Series Experiences

Each storytelling series received its own landing experience, enabling deeper engagement and clearer narrative framing.

Platform Migration

Moving from Squarespace to Framer enabled greater design flexibility, improved performance, and more sustainable content management workflows.

Usability Testing

We conducted usability testing with 10 participants across mobile and desktop devices to evaluate key tasks such as subscribing to the podcast, joining the newsletter, submitting a story, and applying for storytelling programs.
Example Task 1

“You have a story to share with The Nocturnists. Where would you go on the website to submit your story?”

Example Task 2

“You are interested in applying for the Satellites program. Please demonstrate how you would do this.”

Participants successfully completed 100% of tested core tasks, with average completion times ranging from 46 seconds to 2 minutes, indicating that the redesigned navigation and content structure supported efficient task flow.
The overall website experience received an average rating of 4.2 out of 5, with testers highlighting the platform’s clean design, intuitive navigation, and engaging presentation of storytelling content.
Minor recommendations around navigation and link visibility were incorporated prior to launch to improve clarity for first-time visitors.

Impact

Following launch, the organization saw an estimated ~ 20% increase in online donations, suggesting that improved navigation helped users contribute.
The new CMS structure has also significantly reduced internal workload. Staff report saving multiple hours each week when publishing podcast episodes and program updates, allowing the team to focus more on storytelling initiatives rather than manual website management.
With reorganized content and stronger SEO, over 70% of page visits now originate from organic Google search, indicating that episodes and series are more easily discoverable by new audiences.

lover studio exceeded all expectations with their thoughtfulness, professionalism, and creativity. Their ability to translate ideas into stunning visuals while remaining open to feedback made the entire process effortless and inspiring.
