Rescript Journal: Trauma-Informed App UX/UI

Rescript Journal is built on a specific, research-backed method: James Pennebaker's structured expressive writing framework, shown to reduce stress and support emotional processing across a four-day cycle.
The challenge was not the concept. It was translating something that works clinically into something that feels safe enough to actually use. Those are different problems, and the second one is design.
Two branches, one emotional space. A Healing Journal for deep, trauma-focused sessions, and a Mindful Journal for daily reflection and habit building. Both had to feel like they belonged together: supportive without being clinical, structured without being rigid.
The visual direction came from an unexpected reference. Journaling is personal. Most people once had notebooks full of stickers, handwriting, and doodles. That sense of creative ownership and safety became the emotional register, instead of the clean minimal aesthetic wellness apps default to. Earthy tones, soft pastel gradients, rounded typography. Nothing harsh, nothing competing with what the user is trying to do.
One question governed every UX decision: does this make the user feel more or less safe. Information hierarchy, transitions, prompt pacing, empty states, each mapped against the emotional state someone might be in when they open the app. The interface gets out of the way precisely when it needs to.
I stayed involved through development, checking transitions, responsiveness, and analytics integration at each stage rather than handing off at the design stage. Design intent survives to the shipped product only when someone follows it there.
Timeline: 6 weeks. Year: 2025. I led product design end to end.
