Overview

Joist is a comprehensive mobile platform designed to help contractors streamline their businesses, from creating estimates to managing invoices and tracking payments. When I set its sights on enhancing Joist, the goal was clear: elevate the app's usability and design to better serve contractors in the field while driving engagement and retention.

The Challenge

Contractors rely on Joist in high-pressure, on-site environments where time is critical, and simplicity is essential. Feedback highlighted key pain points:
- Cluttered UI: Overly complex workflows hindered quick navigation.
- Lack of Modern Design: The outdated visual style didn't align with the professionalism contractors wanted to convey to their clients.
- Missing Features Between Platforms: Users requested the system to work not only on iOS or Android on the road, but offer the ability to seamlessly switch to Desktop for more in-depth work when at home.
The task was to revamp the app while preserving its core strengths and making it indispensable for contractors.

Our Approach

1. User Research
We conducted interviews and field studies with contractors to understand their day-to-day challenges and how Joist fit into their workflows. These insights informed a user-first redesign strategy.
2. Streamlined User Flows
We restructured the app's navigation, reducing the number of steps required to complete key tasks like creating an estimate or sending an invoice.
3. Modernized UI
A clean, professional design was implemented, with intuitive layouts, improved typography, and a refined color palette to boost usability and brand perception.
4. Prototyping and Testing
Interactive prototypes were tested with real users, allowing us to fine-tune features and resolve issues before development.
