Barro: A sustainable Bio-built residence

Barro is, fundamentally, a home that embraces and materializes sustainability, taking center stage in the design decisions: The challenge was not merely to solve an architectural program, but to design experiences—creating atmospheres, sensations, and moments that conveyed a sense of belonging and serenity. At the same time, practical environmental strategies were incorporated, such as rainwater harvesting and management, greywater treatment through biofilters, and the application of permaculture principles to promote the self-sufficiency and productivity of the site. This was manifested in gardens, native vegetation, and interconnected natural systems that sustain one another.
“Barro,” in this sense, is an exercise in conscious living and in creating architecture with respect and intention.
“Barro” becomes a spatial experience that transcends mere architectural function, inviting the user to journey through an intervened landscape where every detail has been conceived as part of a sensory narrative. The project deliberately plays with compressions and expansions of space, creating moments of intimacy and openness that engage with light, wind, and the surrounding natural context. These volumetric changes not only enrich the perception of space but also serve as tools to frame key elements along the journey—a view, a tree, a courtyard, or a fleeting shadow—transforming the everyday into something contemplative.
In this way, the architecture does not impose itself but gradually reveals itself as a sequence of emotions built from clay, earth, and memory. This design approach, deeply connected to the senses, allows inhabitants not merely to pass through the space, but to discover and inhabit it with a renewed sensitivity, where craftsmanship, ancestry, and contemporaneity coexist in harmony and with purpose.
