Developmental Editing for an Anonymous Romance Novella
Project context
I volunteered as the Developmental Editor and Beta Reader for an author’s early 30,000-word first-draft romance novella for serial romance readers. The manuscript title and author remain confidential.
The challenge
The draft had rushed pacing, scene clutter caused by introducing too many characters at once, and plot holes that created reader confusion. These issues made it difficult for the narrative and character arcs to build with clarity.
My approach
I reviewed the manuscript’s structural integrity, pacing, plot development, character-arc depth, scene prioritization, and dialogue flow. I deconstructed individual scenes against the established character profiles, identified plot gaps, and highlighted opportunities to streamline scene purpose and character introductions.
Deliverables
Comprehensive reader report
In-document margin comments
Developmental feedback letter
Structured revision plan
Outcome
The author received clear, actionable direction to refine scene structure, better balance character introductions, close plot gaps, and strengthen the draft into a more cohesive and engaging romance narrative.
This was volunteer work. The manuscript title and author are confidential.
