The Next Batch | Community Project

Hi, we are Batch , a community of young motion designers from all across Africa, united by a shared passion for animation and visual storytelling. Recently the artists from Batch and Tendril came together to create a film that introduces who we are at Batch. Batch is more than a collective. It’s a journey, a place of growth, and a nurturing ground where creativity flourishes. This film debuted at Batch’s first community event, marking an exciting new chapter in our story.​​​​​​​

The coin symbolizes each member of Batch, representing individuals from diverse backgrounds, across geographical boundaries and with unique skill sets coming together to learn, grow and refine their talents. It reflects a collaborative community that shares a common dedication to excellence in design, whether it’s in 2D illustration, 3D animation, or other creative forms.​​​​​​​

At first we played around with a clean, glassy look and feel. It felt too polished and not representative of the story of community we aiming trying to tell.

The Portal represents the transformative journey each member of Batch undertakes in their pursuit of design excellence and realizing their creative ambitions. By inviting every collaborator to design their own version of the Portal, we celebrate the diversity within the team while highlighting our collective commitment to shared goals. This symbolizes not only personal growth but also the unity and passion that drive Batch as a vibrant community of motion designers across Africa.

This project was a true collaboration between the talents at Batch and Studio Tendril. By working together, each group contributed their unique strengths to shape the design and animation of the film. The collaborative process ensured that every aspect of the project was infused with diverse perspectives, making it not only inclusive but also a reflection of the collective creativity within both teams. This film captures the essence of who we are at Batch—a community driven by a passion for animation, visual storytelling, and growth.

At the event, we hosted a Portal coloring activity where attendees were invited to personalize pre-printed portals with their own design concepts. This interactive experience allowed the wider community to directly contribute to the project’s creation, reflecting Batch's ethos of inclusion and collaboration. Our goal is to ensure that everyone, regardless of skill level or time constraints, can engage in and feel a part of the creative journey that defines Batch​​​​​​​.
