Splice contracted me to edit this video featuring the renown producer Mad Keys as he utilized Arturia's FX Collection in a studio session. When editing a video of this nature, it's sort of a mix of technical precision with a unique bit of making sure to communicate the artistic flair Mad Keys brings to the table. As the video editor, my job was to take the raw footage of Mad Keys, his charismatic on-camera moments, the screen recordings of his DAW, and audio demos, and to blend them into a tight, engaging tutorial that showcased both his sound design expertise and the power of Arturia's effect plugins. When telling stories like this, it's never about just cutting clips together, it's about elevating both the artist and the work that they're doing while also showcasing the products they're using so other artists and producers can be inspired, whether that be bedroom beatmakers to seasoned pros.

The process kicked off with a briefing with the Splice team, to discuss the vision for the video. The goal was ot showcase five key sound design tips, delivered in a way that felt organic yet polished, with Arturia’s FX Collection as the star of the show. I got a folder dump of footage: Mad Keys talking to the camera in his studio, and a bunch of screen captures. My first task (per usual), was to organize the footage.

We agreed on a runtime between 15-20min —short enough to hold attention on YouTube, long enough to dig into the tips. I sketched out a rough structure: intro, five tip segments, and a quick outro with a call-to-action. Mad Keys had a chill, conversational style, so I knew the pacing needed to mirror that—smooth transitions, no jarring cuts, just a vibe that flowed like one of his beats.

Editing this was a balancing act—letting Mad Keys’ personality breathe while keeping it pro-grade for Arturia’s brand. Every cut was about clarity: show the plugin, sell the tip, vibe with the viewer. In the end, I think the result showcases exactly what we set out to do.
