In a world with hobbies flaunted on social media, writing remains the least glamorous — yet perhaps the most transformative. You meet the rubik’s cube hobby when you befriend the class nerd. The film-reviewing hobby when you talk to that yapping introvert. The history hobby when you befriend the autist who would talk nonstop about wars. You notice girls pay attention to that high school senior who just got into calisthenics, doing handstands and front levers — farming all the social media attention. Your social experiences present you with hobbies now in the field of your vision.
Writing is different.
Among the vast collection of hobbies I have assimilated, writing has been the most solitary in practice of all. Probably returns the highest in intellectual gains since it forces retrieval of lost memory — as per the duty of a memoirist. It is a low barrier hobby since it needs no expensive equipment nor long seminary training to get good at it. Advice is abundant in the internet. And to improve at the quickest rate in my opinion is to simply read more, and widely.
