AI Isn't Magic Series at Loveland Public Library by Andres Sepulveda MoralesAI Isn't Magic Series at Loveland Public Library by Andres Sepulveda Morales
I just want to share a quick note here about my motivation regarding this project.
This series was born out of a deep commitment to the Loveland Public Library’s role as a cornerstone of community education. In an era where public academic institutions face significant hurdles, including Loveland's library receiving a recent ~40% budgetary reduction due to city tax reallocations, supporting the library's mission is more critical than ever. This collaboration is one of many events to reinforce the library as a vital 'learning staple,' designed to engage the community and reinforce the value of public-access expertise.
I could not be happier to support Erik, Rachel, Calvin, and the rest of the Loveland Public Library staff with this event, and I'm ecstatic to see the community involvement around all the amazing events they're planning this year!!
Project Overview
The AI Isn’t Magic series is designed to demystify artificial intelligence for the general public. By stripping away the marketing hype and technical jargon, these workshops empower participants to use generative tools critically and effectively.
Core Objectives
Demystify: Break down complex neural network concepts into relatable analogies.
Critical Literacy: Help users identify the strengths and inherent flaws (hallucinations, bias) of LLMs.
Practical Application: Move from "playing" with AI to using it as a functional tool.
The session unpacks Large Language Models (LLMs) without the jargon. Participants will understand the relationship between training data, probability, and output, leaving with a clear mental model of why A.I makes mistakes and how it actually 'thinks.'
Key Concepts Covered:
The Probability Engine: Why AI predicts the "next best token" rather than "knowing" facts.
Training Data vs. Knowledge: How the internet’s collective text forms the basis of AI behavior.
The "Why" of Mistakes: Understanding why LLMs confidently provide incorrect information.
Participant Takeaway: A clear mental model of AI "thought" processes to better troubleshoot prompts.

Planned Sessions
The core theme, "AI Isn't Magic," focuses on grounding the technology in practical, understandable terms. Note that these sessions can be adjust based on library needs.Â
Part I: Foundational Literacy (Beginner Friendly): Demystifying the "black box" of AI and building a practical toolkit for everyday use.
Part II: Contextual Application & Ethics (Intermediate): Exploring the "So what?" of AI—ethics, environment, creativity, and accessibility.
