Gardening can be challenging for many home gardeners, often leading to difficulties in properly caring for their plants and keeping them thriving. Our innovative gardening app aims to address these common problems by providing valuable information and helpful advice for household plants.
With this app, it is now easier to identify plant diseases, pests, and to determine the right kind of fertilizers and watering schedules for your plants. PlantDoc has a user-friendly interface that enables gardeners to upload images of their plants and receive instant recommendations and advice on how to take care of them.
Gardening offers numerous benefits to individuals, both in terms of physical and mental well-being. Here are some evidence-based benefits of gardening:
Stress reduction: Engaging in gardening activities has been found to reduce stress levels. A study published in the Journal of Health Psychology found that gardening significantly decreased cortisol levels, a hormone associated with stress, among participants (Soga et al., 2017).
Mood improvement: Gardening has a positive impact on mood and can uplift spirits. Research conducted at the University of Bristol revealed that gardening is linked to improved mood and self-esteem (Sexton et al., 2018).
Physical exercise: Gardening is a physical activity that offers exercise benefits. It involves various movements such as digging, planting, and weeding, which contribute to increased physical exertion. A study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that gardening can be considered moderate to high-intensity physical activity, leading to improved cardiovascular health (van den Berg et al., 2010).
Cognitive stimulation: Gardening stimulates cognitive functions and can contribute to mental sharpness. A study published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease found that regular gardening activities were associated with a reduced risk of dementia and improved cognitive function in older adults (Wang et al., 2012).

USER SURVEY ‘ S RESULT

The survey was undertaken by a group of 15 individuals with the aim of gaining deeper insights into users' experiences, challenges, and requirements when it comes to gardening. Through this survey, we sought to understand the struggles faced by users and identify their specific needs in the realm of gardening. By gathering valuable feedback from these participants, we aimed to shape the development of our gardening app in a way that addresses their pain points and fulfills their gardening aspirations.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Beginner Gardeners: These individuals are new to gardening and are seeking guidance, tips, and resources to get started. They may be looking for information on basic plant care, selecting suitable plants for their region, and learning essential gardening techniques.
Enthusiastic Hobbyists: These are passionate gardeners who have some experience and knowledge in gardening. They enjoy experimenting with different plants, exploring advanced techniques, and expanding their gardening skills.
Urban Dwellers with Limited Space: This audience consists of individuals living in apartments, condos, or small urban spaces who are interested in urban gardening or indoor plants. They may be looking for tips on container gardening, vertical gardening, or selecting plants that thrive in limited spaces.
Plant Lovers and Collectors: This group includes plant enthusiasts who have a deep love for plants and enjoy collecting unique and rare species. They may be interested in a plant identification feature, plant care tips for specific species, and information on plant propagation and care for specific plant families.

PROBLEMS:

Limited gardening experience: Some individuals have minimal knowledge about gardening and struggle to care for their plants effectively. They may lack information on how to tend to different plant varieties, making it time-consuming to search for each plant online. Furthermore, they may not even know the specific types of plants they have in their garden.
Difficulty finding appropriate plants: Many people spend a significant amount of time searching for plants that are suitable for their garden based on factors like location, soil conditions, and weather. This process can be overwhelming and time-consuming.
Time constraints: People often have limited time available to research and gather information about plant care and cultivation techniques.

SOLUTION:

To address these problems, our proposed solution is to develop a user-friendly gardening app with the following features:
Informative plant library: The app will offer a comprehensive library of plants and gardening tools. Users can easily access this repository to obtain the necessary information for caring for their plants.
Garden care assistance: The app will assist users in nurturing their gardens by helping them track the growth of flowers and plants. Users can upload photos of their plants and share information with a community of fellow gardeners.
Plant-specific notifications: Users can add the specific plants they have in their garden, and the app will provide timely notifications regarding their care requirements. This includes reminders for watering, pesticide application, and other essential tasks to ensure optimal plant health.

SCENARIO

Amy, a data analyst residing in her own apartment situated in the heart of Melbourne CBD, recently established a charming little garden on her balcony a few weeks ago. Despite her enthusiasm, she lacks experience in gardening, and as a result, some of her plants, specifically the monster at and mint, are displaying yellow leaves, leaving her perplexed. Upon a friend's recommendation, she decided to download Plantdoc, an app designed to provide plant advice.
After registering and inputting her information, Amy eagerly delved into the app's features. To seek guidance regarding her plants, she tapped on the "Plantdoc" button. The app prompted her to grant camera access, and she selected "Allow when using the app." Utilizing her device's camera, she captured photos of her plants. Once the app analyzed the images, it revealed the cause of the yellow leaves—insufficient sunlight and overwatering.
Additionally, the app furnished Amy with valuable insights on plant care, empowering her to take corrective measures. Enthralled by its efficacy, Amy considers Plantdoc an incredibly valuable tool that has aided in salvaging her plants.
